Dr. Ahlquist work on many different viruses, including plant virus, Brome mosaic virus (BMV). I need to mention that BMV was the first plant RNA virus for which designed infectious transcripts were engineered from cloned viral cDNA. This allowed recombinant DNA manipulation of the viral genome for mechanistic studies and other goals, and has since been used in vitro and in vivo for reverse genetics of many other RNA viruses. The other important thing is that Dr. Ahlquist demonstrated that BMV proteins direct virus-specific RNA replication, transcription, encapsidation and recombination in the genetic model yeast. It opened a door for “system biology studies”. Using different host model to study viral and host functions in many infection processes.
Another notable contribution from Paul’s group is working on tumor viruses: Hepatitis B virus and retroviruses and a major DNA tumor virus, human papillomavirus. Dr. Ahlquist also conducted the first genome-wide analysis of host factors in Influenza virus replication, again, this is a pioneer study for virus-host interaction.
