What is Horizon?
The Horizon Magnet program is a rigorous learning community for driven, motivated, and academically talented students. Horizon promotes collaborative learning and leadership building for intellectually motivated students who strive for academic success with a global perspective within a broad and balanced curriculum. Driven by our committment to Global Awareness and the necessity to make a difference both locally and globally through voice and action, our Horizon magnet scholars embrace opportunities (both in and out of the classroom) to broaden their perspective about our world and to showcase skills and talents that are aligned with their interests and values, with the goal of making a difference for the greater good.
The program admits up to 44 rising ninth graders each year, keeping Horizon classes to approximately a 22:1 student-teacher ratio. Recommended prerequisite coursework for ninth graders is one credit of Algebra 1, one credit of English 1, and one credit in a foreign language. All applicants complete an interview and writing sample. Teacher recommendations, grades, and test scores are reviewed as well.
Rising tenth graders may apply . Recommended prerequisite coursework for tenth graders is one credit of Algebra 1 and Geometry, one credit of Honors English, and two years of foreign language. In addition, an interview and writing sample are required. Teacher recommendations, grades, and test scores are reviewed as well.
Cultural Events and Community Service Forms
In addition to maintaing high academic standards and behavioral standards, all Horizon freshman and sophomores must complete 20 hours of community service and attend 4 cultural events.
