Natural disasters are inevitable. You can't avoid them but you can reduce their impact for sure if you get an early warning before the occurrence of that particular event. Keeping this thing in mind, we have designed "Earthquake Monitoring System".
Whenever an Earthquake occurs, it has four waves. It has two body waves which are primary and secondary waves and two surface waves which are Love and Rayleigh waves. The first one are the primary waves (P-waves) which are first waves from an earthquake to arrive at a seismograph. P-waves are non-destructive and travel more quickly through the Earth's crust than do the secondary wave (S-wave). The S-waves causes particles to oscillate. S waves can travel through solid material but not through liquid or gas. Surface waves, in contrast to body waves can only move along the surface. They arrive after the main P and S waves and are confined to the outer layers of the Earth. They cause the most surface destruction.
The arrival time difference between P and S wave is almost about 10-15 seconds. Earthquake advance warning is possible by detecting the non-destructive primary waves that travel more quickly through the Earth's crust than do the destructive secondary and Rayleigh waves.
Imagine you are in your office walking through corridors or moving in an elevator and suddenly an earthquake occurs then what will you do? Imagine children are sitting in their classrooms in their school and an earthquake occurs then what will they do? Even if you are in your home, in some meeting or attending a seminar an early warning will make sure that you are not going to panic and suddenly you are going to take some certain precautionary measures in coming 10 to 15 seconds before severe earthquake waves are going to strike to your ground like taking a cover of wooden table at which you are working, standing by the side of a strong pillar, standing in between the doors as they are going to get destructed in the very end if some destruction occurs as a result of that Earthquake. In this way, we can minimize risk of losing a of human life in case of such an event.
This device has the following features:
o Gives an early warning 10-15 seconds before an earthquake occurs.
o Standalone System from earthquake detection to earthquake measurement.
o Calculate local earthquakes only, the one's whose seismic waves will reach to the ground where this system is implemented.
o Earthquake Alarm will sound only if it will be above a certain threshold neglecting low intensities earthquakes which usually occurs due to disturbances (human interaction or environmental disturbances etc).
o Contains a customized GUI which is updating device status (either running perfectly or not) after every second. It also provides temperature status of the device. It also has an "Earthquake Alarm" indicator which will be on in case if an earthquake occurs.
o GUI will also be fetching raw values in X, Y and Z direction from the device after every second as an indication that device is continuously monitoring any earthquake activity.
o Database of all the Earthquakes occurred since the deployment of the system till to date will be stored locally as well as latest 50 Earthquakes can be seen through it's GUI.
o It is not necessary that to see an indication it's GUI should always be open (you can use your PC for some other purpose as well like your office or home work etc). Keeping this thing in mind we have also designed a windows service which will be running in background on your local system. So in order to listen to an Earthquake Alarm, your PC should be turn on only whether it's GUI is running or not.
o Very sensitive device as it can sense very ordinary vibrations like knocking at the door, hitting the wall on which it is installed so it should be installed at some place where human and environmental disturbances are minimum.
o Operating Temperature of device is -40 to 85 °C. Performance parameters are not applicable beyond Specified Temperature Range.
This Project is currently implemented in Arfa Software Technology Park, Lahore on two different floors (1st and 17th ) since 23th August 2016 till to date.
