The Academic Freedom Alliance (AFA) is a non-profit organization whose members are dedicated to protecting the rights of faculty members at colleges and universities to speak, instruct, and publish without fear of sanction or punishment. We uphold the principles that are required if scholars are to fulfill their vocation as truth-seekers and colleges and universities are to be faithful to their mission as truth-seeking institutions.

Members of the Academic Freedom Alliance come from across the political spectrum. We are united in our commitment to truth-seeking scholarship, and in recognizing that an attack on academic freedom anywhere is an attack on academic freedom everywhere.

The AFA will raise funds to support litigation for faculty members whose constitutionally, statutorily, contractually, or other legally protected rights to academic freedom have been violated or are under threat.

Individuals at academic institutions should not fear suppression or retaliation for teaching, writing, or speaking. We encourage you to join the movement in supporting the flourishing of intellectual life and the pursuit of knowledge and truth at institutions of higher learning.

These policies and procedures are issued by the Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs and published in the Academic Personnel Manual (APM). Academic Personnel and Programs maintains the official copy of the APM, including the online version of the APM and any subsequent changes. The APM Policy Development Process is designed to insure that APM policies undergo comprehensive review and meet certain standards.

Academic appointees subject to policies and procedures within the APM include, but are not limited to, faculty such as professorial rank faculty, lecturers and clinical faculty; academic research professionals such as professional researchers and specialists; academic service professionals such as librarians and cooperative extension specialists and advisors; and graduate student employees such as research and teaching assistants. The APM applies only to the extent provided for in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for academic appointees covered by collective bargaining.

Questions about maintaining the APM may be directed to Kelly Anders and questions regarding academic review of Presidential policy may be directed to Gina Durrin. Specific academic personnel policy questions from those located at a University of California campus may be directed to the local Academic Personnel Office.
