The Department of Physics was established in 1964. It offers undergraduate three years Bachelor of Science program in Physics, postgraduate Master of Science in Physics course and PhD in Physics. The department has 06 teaching staff and 10 non teaching staff. Around 200 students are enrolled from First Year B Sc to PhD program.
The department is a part of prestigious DBT star college grant that college has received for nurturing the basic sciences culture and to reach to grass root of the education system-The students. Under this scheme, the department conducts various subject related events and workshops to inculcate various qualities like logical reasoning, experimental skills, scientific knowledge and research skills in students. In recognition of this work, the DBT has granted us the STAR status.
To succeed in any discipline, one needs to have broad based knowledge of science and a deep knowledge of specific research area. To cater these needs, Physics department started M.Sc. in 2016-17. It has two research laboratories recognized by Mumbai University where M. Sc. and Ph. D. students work under the able guidance of highly qualified and experienced teachers. The faculties are awarded minor and major research projects funded by UGC, CSIR, SERB, ISRO and Mumbai University.
Starting from the year 2018-19, the college has become autonomous allowing the department to experiment novel approaches to teaching and evaluation. However, it is still affiliated to the University of Mumbai and the degree is given by the University.
With the autonomy, we have started conducting our M. Sc. lectures, with the help of distinguished visiting faculty, from 2018-19. More emphasis is given on problem solving. The students carry out their M. Sc. projects in various Institutes, like BARC, HBCSE, ICT, IIGM, IITB, SAMEER, TIFR, etc., in the city. In the year 2019-20, we have introduced new electives in Material Science and also restructured the courses to introduce a course on Computational Physics. It would be our endeavor to introduce more electives.
The Department has well-equipped laboratory. The advanced instruments include a Zeeman effect apparatus, NMR and ESR set-ups, Geiger-Muller counter, Quincke's method's apparatus, etc.
