The Battle of Berezina took place from November 26 to 29, 1812, between the French army of Napoleon, retreating after his invasion of Russia and crossing the Berezina (near Borisov, Belarus), and the Russian armies under Mikhail Kutuzov, Peter Wittgenstein and Admiral Pavel Chichagov. Napoleon's plan was to cross the Berezina River and head for Poland, while his enemies wanted to trap him there and destroy him. The original plan to cross the frozen river quickly proved impossible, as the usually frozen waterway had thawed and was now impassable. The battle ended with a mixed outcome. French losses are placed at 25,000 combatants. Among the French casualties were three generals and four colonels, killed during this battle. Russian losses are usually placed at up to 8,000 combatants. The French suffered heavy losses but managed to cross the river and avoid being trapped. Since then "Bérézina" has been used in French as a synonym for "disaster".
Borisov is the only Belarusian city which was included into the European Federation of the Napoleonic cities on April 21,2014. The document was signed by Chairman of the European Federation of Napoleonic Cities Charles Napoleon and Chairman of the Borisov District Executive Committee. The European Federation of Napoleonic Cities was set up in 2004. Members of the federation are more than 60 cities of Belgium, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia, Czechia and other European countries. All of them were influenced by the famous French commander. The major objectives of the federation are to facilitate tourist contacts, carry out joint cultural projects, provide support to historians studying the history of Napoleonic wars, and promote cooperation between learning institutions and young people. Every year a lot of events such as parades, a battle reenactment, balls are held in Borisov.

Students' project
Recently,a poster design “The Facts about China” was held in Borisov Gymnasia 3, students from 6th form, 7th form and 10th form participated. Eight teams (fifteen students) were selected to be the winners. As a reward, Jiang Xiaole, the Chinese teacher of Gymnasia 3 organized a Sino-Belarusian Food Exchange. During this event, students watched the process of cooking Chinese food and learnt how to use chopsticks. At first, it was hard for them to hold the chopsticks, and they cannot find the tips of using this new tableware. The teacher showed the way of picking up noodles and porks with chopsticks, after practicing, some of the students got quite skillful. In addition, the teacher introduced several common flavors such as Huajiao (Sichuan pepper), dark soy sauce and vinegar to all of the winners, then they tasted five Chinese dishes including tomato slices with sugar, cola chicken wings, stewed pork in brown sauce, shredded potatoes and noodles mixed with scallion, oil and soy sauce. Apart from having Chinese dishes, each student brought their favorite local food and talked about the differences between the food of these two countries. Students said that Belarusian food tastes much more sweet than Chinese food, and the way of cutting potatoes is also quite different, but the stewed pork in brown sauce and noodles got pretty good feedbacks from students. Through this event, students learnt more about China, they were also aware of the diversity in dietary habit and culture.

Autumn holidays were super. Our 6 form students visited the most famous landmarks in Belarus: Mir and Nesvish castles. They are in UNESCO World Heritage List. The students were impressed by their architecture and history. They have their ghosts!!!
Niasvizh Castle is known for its ghost, the mysterious Czornaja Panna (Black Lady). Legend says it is the spirit of Barbara Radziwill, the young wife of King Sigismund II Augustus, who was poisoned by her insidious mother-in-law Bona Sforza and returned to the castle after death.
Modern researchers stick to the version of cancer being the reason for the Queen’s death. Whether it is true or not, but Czornaja Panna has been linked with the place for a long time. They say, the ghost was scaring the life out of German soldiers, who were based in the former Radziwills residence during WWII. The last time she was seen was shortly before the fire, that broke out in the castle in 2002.
The ghost of Mir castle is the spirit of the daughter of the castle’s owner, Nikolai Svyatopolk-Mirsky. 12-year-old Sofia drowned in the pond in the garden, and soon after her father followed the girl. People believe it was not by accident – the pond was allegedly cursed by a witch, who lost her son during the building of the pond.
