World Crane Day
World Crane Day is celebrated on September 8 in 2019. It is dedicated to the most beautiful and graceful bird in the world. The crane population is widespread all over the world. There are 15 species of cranes in the world but only the grey crane inhabits Belarus. It is listed in the Red Book. On this day festivals, events, contests, photo exhibitions dedicated to the cranes are held in different countries.
Eco-festival "Cranes and cranberries"
of Miory District
Eco-festival "Cranes and cranberries" of Miory District, Vitebsk Oblast, was held on September 15. It is dedicated to watching cranes as they fly over local cranberry bogs on their way to the south. The place and time for the ecological event were chosen deliberately because it is the high season for harvesting cranberries and the Yelnia bog has the largest stocks of cranberries in Belarus. Besides, every year the Miory district becomes a “guest house” for more than 4000 cranes and 10000 geese which stop for rest at the Yelnia bog during the autumn migration. Everybody could also watch hundreds of cranes feeding in the daytime in the neighboring fields. The guests of the festival took part in ecological games for kids and adults, elected “Cranberry Princess of Miory” among schoolgirls and sent “crane mail” with warm wishes to their friends and relatives. Every winner got a small souvenir with a picture of a crane and cranberry as a present.
