My dear granny

I’d like to tell you about my granny Anna Ivanovna Smantser. She is well-known not only among her colleagues. She is still recognized by her former pupils and their parents whenever and wherever they meet her. I think her popularity is connected not only with a long period of work as a teacher of English at our school. She used to be active both in the lessons and out-of-school activities. My granny went on different trips and hikes, organized excursions to other towns of our country, for example Brest and Orsha. Anna Ivanovna took her pupils to various theatres in Minsk and in this way they acquired necessary knowledge about performances of Belarussian actors and actresses. What I like most is her singing. She seems to know hundreds of songs and sometimes changes the words of a song leaving the melody as it sounds. By the way nowadays she sings in a church choir on Sundays and is quite pleased with it. There is one more thing I’d like to tell you. My granny is very inventive. When I was little she used to compose different tales about cars, lorries and their adventures. Today her real hobby is flowers. She has got some kinds at home and keeps them on the windowsills. There are some in her little garden, too. They look so lovely in blossom. My granny is a great woman, so trustworthy, generous and supportive. I adore her. Yevgeny S., 11 Form Student

A pretty lively event——Confucius Institute Day

On October 5th, 2019, the Minsk State Linguistic University and other four Confucius Institutes in Gomel and Vitebsk held a grand event to celebratethe ‘Confucius Institute Day’ in the Liberty Square, the center of Minsk. The purpose of this activity is to enhance the educational cooperation between China and Belarus, further boost Chinese teaching and to improve students' interest of Chinese learning. On the day of the event, many Chinese lanterns were hung over the Liberty Square. In the center of the square, a main stage for performance was set up, around the stage there were some red tents where the Chinese teachers from different Confucius Institutes showing people various traditional Chinese folk art such as Chinese knots, Chinese calligraphy, paper-cutting, traditional Chinese paintings, etc., many students at the scene got a rice paper with their own Chinese names on it as a souvenir.

College students, primary and secondary school students all over Belarus sang Chinese songs, some students played traditional Chinese instruments and some of them even performed Chinese martial arts. Although the weather was cold that day, the enthusiasm of local people made everything warmer.

As a volunteer Chinese teacher from Minsk State Linguistic University, Jiang Xiaole, the Chinese teacher of Borisov Gymnasia 3# also led several students to the Confucius Institute Day. Students watched how to make Chinese knot there, by the end of this activity, some students were interviewed by Minsk State Linguistic University. They said that they likeChinese language very much and hoped to enter the linguistic university to further their Chinese learning. They also mentioned that October 5th was the Teacher's Day of Belarus, this coincidence made the Confucius Institute Day much more meaningful.

Eurobirdwatch

Fascinated by bird migration? October is a truly spectacular time for birdwatching in Belarus. It is the time when the sky is full of migrating birds on their way in search of their wintering spot.

EuroBirdwatch is the largest annual event of the BirdLife Partnership held at this time of year to celebrate migratory birds.

This annual birdwatching initiative is organised every year by all BirdLife partner organisations during the same weekend in several countries across Europe and Central Asia. Hundreds of local birdwatchers will identify and count passing birds during the great autumn migration when millions of birds make their epic journey southwards to wintering areas in the Mediterranean and Africa. Belarus will contribute too by reporting its numbers.

Photobirding

What exactly is photobirding? I am neither a photographer nor a birder. I just have a digital camera with a good zoom and live in an area where there are a lot of birds . I started using the birds as target practice for my new camera when suddenly it occurred to me that I could record the different birds in and around my house. I started taking my camera with me on my morning and evening walks and clicking at the many feathered creatures that call it home and shelter. The number of species are not important but suffice to say that it was far more than I expected and all clicked within a radius of 2-3 km from my house.

About Romania with love

On the 19th of October our students met a Romanian volunteer Jessica. She told them about her native country, about geography, famous people and landmarks. Our students asked her questions about her pet, hobby, Romanian holidays and traditions. They also told her about Belarusian holidays and traditions and compared Belarusian and Romanian cuisine. They recommended her to visit Mir castle, Nesvizh Castle, the Belovezhskaya Pushcha and the Braslav Lakes because our nature is beautiful and the castles are great.

The most important lesson in the world

On October 25 the most important lesson was held in our gymnasia. It was about The Global Goals for Sustainable Development.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030.

The 17 SDGs are integrated —that is, they recognize that action in one area will affect outcomes in others, and that development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability.

Through the pledge to Leave No One Behind, countries have committed to fast-track progress for those furthest behind first. That is why the SDGs are designed to bring the world to several life-changing ‘zeros’, including zero poverty, hunger, AIDS and discrimination against women and girls.

Everyone is needed to reach these ambitious targets. The creativity, knowhow, technology and financial resources from all of society is necessary to achieve the SDGs in every context.

Great Travellers

The students of our gymnasia are great travellers. They like visiting both cultural and historicul places. I n October 8 Form students visited Brest. It is 430 km from Borisov. Brest is 1000. It has its own history and sights. Brest Fortress dates back to the 19th century. It is a symbol of Soviet resistance in World War II. Two major events are held annually in Brest fortress. They are Victory Day on May 9 and the reconstruction of the beginning of the war on June 22. They serve as remembrance of the tragedy that brought pain and suffering to almost every Belarusian family.

The entry of the fortress represents a huge star cut into a concrete block. The radio announcer informs about the invasion of the German army. As you walk up to the centre of the fortress you see "Thirst", a large monument depicting an injured soldier trying to get some water from the river. The monument reflects the bravery of the last remaining soldiers who defended the Fortress for many days without food or water.

The Courage monument stands 33.5m high and tells the story of the heroic defence of the fortress through a series of carvings. There is an eternal flame which is guarded by 4 teenagers from the Pioneers Corps. There is an Eternal Fire in front of the remnants of the former engineering department.

We also visited the museum of the Middle Age town Berestye. It was very interesting. We learnt how Belarusian people lived many centuries ago. The museum of the Railway Equipment was great. It has 170 exhibits of the railway transport from various periods of history. Some of them are used in filming. In 2009, the monument in honor of 1000th anniversary of the city was created in Brest. Its height is 15 meters. The crown of it is an angel's figure that is the guard of Brest. He has a cross and a shield. There are images of historical persons and images of a mother, a soldier and a cronicler.

3 Form students visited the Museum of Nature and Ecology of the Republic of Belarus. A lot of birds, anmals and insects inhabit our country and our students could see this variety. It has 42000 exhibits. They also visited an open-air museum of stones in Minsk.

5 Form students visited the Belarussian State Circus. They saw the best performances of the Second Minsk International Festival of Circus Art. They were impressed by amazing tightrope walkers, great jugglers, cool balancers and acrobats, fascinating aerialists and funny clowns. They also saw trained animals: white tigers, horses and bears.

3 form students visited the Museum complex of ancient crafts and technologies Dudutki in October. They had an exciting trip into the world of the age-old manners and occupations as well as the tasting of distinctive Belarusian dishes and horse-riding. It was super. It is often visited place in Belarus. People can see a lot of tourists from different countries there.

Our teachers are theatre-goers. They often visit the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theater of the Republic of Belarus. It is one of biggest theaters in Europe and the architectural landmark of Minsk. In October they saw a ballet "Spartacus" by A. Khachaturyan. It was staged by V. Yelizaryev. In May it was seen in China.
