I like to create sculptures in clay because I like being able to make clean cut things with my hands. But I can also make lumpy, bumpy pieces just depending on how I feel and how the project is going. The freedom of being able to create whatever I feel and turn my emotions into a sculpture is why I do what I do. I like to create things with a story behind them or a meaning so people who look at my piece can get a sense of why I created it.
Before creating a piece I usually get inspiration through something that is happening in the world or something that happened to me or even a topic that I feel strongly about. My main form of creating things is slab building, where I roll out huge slabs of clay and carefully shape them to fit the form I desire. While building "twisted love" I carefully cut slabs and shaped them and fit them together so that the two separate towers would become one complete sculpture. Also a unique element to this project was the textured spray paint, it added an element that brought everything together even though I used two different colors.
From my slab building that carried meaning with me , I turned to something I never tried before... I sculpted a chicken in effigy form using pinch pots and attaching applique. Half of the chicken is "alive" and the other half is "fried" and is a small portion in a bigger project I am working on. It is supposed to bring light on animal cruelty in meat factories and how we mistreat our animals in very gruesome and disgusting ways. There will be two other parts to this project and with them it will be complete.
This is my favorite piece that I have made. It was made of slabs of clay with sections that were cut out so they would fit together perfectly. It represents a toxic relationship that neither can get out of because of there love for each other.
This project was made of slabs and carefully pieced together so that all sections would fit together perfectly. To make contrast I used different sized drill bits an strategically cut out holes, and it turned out looking like a block of swiss cheese.
Midas was a king in greek mythology who could turn everything he touched into gold. These mugs did not turn out how I planned them to when all of the handles broke off so I put them back together with plaster and added gold on the handles. Then gold dots everywhere I thought fit and I felt like Midas because the mugs just came together with the gold.
This project was based of famous Russin painter Leonid Afremov, with his work with palet knifes and oil paints to create colorful and beautiful paintings and I wanted to try and do the same on my pot.
The standard for this project was to make a set with the use of mixed media, which is something incorporated other than earthen wear. I added the rope and ink after the pot was made to add a contrast.
