Divadlo je umění tak jako válečnictví a hazard tak jako hra v ruletě; nikdy se neví předem, jak to dopadne. V divadle je možno vše, je to dům divů. Největším divem ovšem je, že to vůbec běží.

Nejen o premiéře, ale i každého večera je čirým divem, že se vůbec hraje, a když už se hraje, že se dohraje až do konce. 

Zvedá-li se o půl osmé večer opona, buďte si vědomi, že je to šťastná náhoda nebo přímo zázrak.

Theatre is an art, like warfare, and gambling, like a game of roulette; you never know in advance how it will turn out. In theatre, anything is possible, it is a house of wonders. The greatest wonder, however, is that it is going on at all.

Not only at the premiere, but every evening, it is a sheer wonder that it is being performed at all, and when it is being performed, that it is being performed to the end.

If the curtain rises at half past seven in the evening, be aware that it is a happy coincidence or a miracle.
