In this article, we will show you how to install and configure Revit Server for worksharing. We will also explain the different roles and functions of Revit Server, such as host, accelerator and admin. Follow these steps carefully and you will be able to use Revit Server for worksharing in no time.
Step 1: Install the Revit Server Prerequisites on Your Server
The first step is to install the Revit Server prerequisites on your server. These are the software components that are required for Revit Server to run properly. You need to install the following prerequisites on your server:
A compatible server operating system. You can check the system requirements for Revit Server here.
The Internet Information Services (IIS) web server. You can install it from the Windows Server Manager or from the Control Panel.
The Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 or later. You can download it from here.
The Microsoft Silverlight browser plug-in (for Revit Server versions 2019 and earlier). You can download it from here. Note: For Revit Server versions 2020 and later, Silverlight is not required as Revit Server Administrator supports mainstream web browsers.
After installing the prerequisites, you need to restart your server for the changes to take effect.
Step 2: Download and Install the Revit Server on Your Server
The next step is to download and install the Revit Server on your server. You can download the Revit Server installer from the Autodesk website or from the Revit installation package or media. The installer is a self-extracting executable file that contains the setup file and the driver file.
To install the Revit Server on your server, you need to do the following:
Disable your antivirus software and firewall temporarily. Some antivirus software and firewall may detect Revit Server as a threat and block its installation or operation.
Extract the installer file and run the setup file. Follow the on-screen instructions and choose the destination folder where you want to install Revit Server.
On the Configure Installation page, select one or more roles that you want to enable for this instance of Revit Server. The roles are:
Host: This role allows the server to host central models that can be accessed by other users.
Accelerator: This role allows the server to cache local models that can improve the synchronization speed and performance.
Admin: This role allows the server to run the Revit Server Administrator, which is a web-based tool that lets you manage and monitor your Revit Server network.
(Optional) Under Data Storage, accept the default locations for the Cache and Projects folders, or select different ones. If you change the drive, it must have the appropriate access rights so that Revit Server can successfully write to it.
(Optional) Under Data Storage, if you want to use network-attached storage (NAS) or storage area network (SAN) environments, select Store data remotely on a network server, and then enter the domain and password for a dedicated RevitServerService domain user account. The paths for the Cache and Projects folders must be fully qualified UNC paths. Mapped drives will not be accepted.
