Welcome to the 1stGenYale Summer Bulldogs collection of summer internships for Yale College students on financial aid. We are proud to be a Yale Office of Career Strategy's Preferred Yale Partner.
This is a great opportunity to do direct research, have a window into a professional school and professions, and add research to your resume and possible future applications to graduate school.
We are now (mid-April) accepting applications on a first-come, first-served, case-by-case basis through
11:59 p.m. April 30, 2023
Fellowship or Award Funding is required for any unpaid internship.
[exception: March 31 deadline for Week-long Diversity and Discovery Business Externships]
BACKGROUND
1stGenYale alumni volunteers created 1stGenYale Summer Bulldogs to connect Yale College students on financial aid, many of whom are first-generation, to internship opportunities in two ways: (1) sourcing summer internships with Yale faculty in the professional schools, non-profit, and for-profit sponsors, and (2) identifying Yale's funding options. We began in summer 2020, reacting to the pandemic’s effect on summer internships for our Yalie FGLI students.
Since 2020, 150 Yale College students have interned as 1stGenYale Summer Bulldogs. They have received almost $500,000 in summer funding through Yale’s Center for International & Professional Experiences (CIPE). This year, we are working to also connect to more paid internships. 1stGenYale Summer Bulldogs is an entirely volunteer-run program and we rely on donations to operate.
For more information, see our recent Summer Bulldogs report highlighting both faculty and students' experiences and our 11/11/21 live webinar. 1stGenYale is a Yale Alumni Association Shared Interest Group and a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
ELIGIBILITY and FUNDING
Yale College students, we invite you to apply for research opportunities this summer with Yale faculty, nonprofit and for profit sponsors! Positions are paid, or if "unpaid" they qualify to be funded by the $4,000 SEA or other fellowships for eligible students. Note that many of these summer project sponsors do not have funds to support summer positions, so students are required to secure funding through Yale resources. Housing is not included in these internships unless indicated by the sponsor. Interns must make their own arrangements.
Students are strongly encouraged to apply for fellowships NOW because the fellowship deadlines begin as early as JANUARY. Apply for fellowships now even if you plan to apply for an SEA later. You do not need to secure an internship before applying for fellowship funding. For those Yale college students eligible for the SEA, if you receive a fellowship for the full amount of your proposed budget, your SEA-eligibility might be available for another summer. Students receive fellowship award notifications in mid-April. See the Funding Guide below for more information.
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
Yale College students may apply for up to two internships, also known as positions! Review the positions ("openings") listed below (or visit our Career Portal at https://1stgenyale.breezy.hr/) and decide which interest you. You do not need to be first-gen to apply. If an internship has multiple projects, you may count two as one internship toward your limit. The positions may be remote/virtual or in-person, or flexible, as indicated by the sponsor in the Work Model field. Locations for in-person only and hybrid positions are shown as where you would work in-person. Remote-only positions are shown as located in the United States, but could be completed from anywhere in the world if sponsor and funding source allow.
1) Have your unofficial Yale transcript/course history and resume ready.
2) Select the position you are interested in and draft an essay or essays (200 words maximum) on why you are interested in the summer position(s), what you expect to contribute, and what you hope to learn from the experience.
3) Click "Apply to Position."
4) Upload your resume.
5) Upload your unofficial Yale transcript.
6) Upload your short essay(s) (200-words-or-less)
7) Answer the profile questions.
8) Submit! Watch for emails on your application status from sb23@1stgenyale.org or Breezy HR@breezy-mail.com.
9) Add SB23@1stgenyale.org to your contacts list. Check your spam folders.

Begin searching for eligible summer fellowship funding NOW, even before you are sure which internship project(s) you want to apply for.
How to apply for fellowship funding. Search first in the Student Grants Database. For more information, ask questions via fellowships@yale.edu, or sign-up for a quick advising appointment in the Fellowships Office.
If you are on financial aid: No matter whether you previously used the one-time Summer Experience Award (SEA, formerly called the DSA), or will apply for the SEA for the first time, apply for other fellowships and awards, too.

You will need to put together a proposal, budget, and provide a letter of recommendation. You do not need to know if you have been selected for the project to be able to apply for a fellowship. Most fellowship deadlines are in early February and continue through early March. If you are applying for a research internship, then you should submit an academic recommendation from a Yale faculty member. Fellowship funding, which will vary by program and budget, is competitive and not guaranteed.
How to apply for SEA funding. After you have received an internship offer, you are eligible to apply for the Student Experience Award (SEA) – Locate the application or log into Yale's Career Link, and select “Professional Experiences” located on the left-hand side of the screen.
Go to the Professional Experiences tab, then the Experiential Learning Type field, then select "Add New Experience" and roll to select “Submit Summer Experience Award Application.” Each SEA application requires a Host Organization Verification Form (HOVF) (located within the SEA application) that is completed, and signed by, the supervisor/mentor. Download the HOVF from Career Link, fill in as much as you can as a courtesy to your sponsor, and email it immediately to your sponsor for completion and signature. Ask the sponsor to return the completed HOVF for you to upload (“Add Attachment”) within the SEA application. For SEA award questions, please contact OCS at sea@yale.edu and cc sb23@1stgenyale.org.
SEA application is due May 2, 2023 an 1 p.m. Eastern. Advice from OCS: Apply for Yale Fellowships simultaneously, not just for the SEA.
