Reston & Area Veteran Memorial Banners

The Reston Memorial Park will be the new home for the banners of Reston sponsored veterans. This spring work began in the park in preparation to install the poles along the walkway with the goal to have the banners up for July 1st. Locating the banners in the park will give visitors a more up close and personal view of the veterans.

The banner committee would like to thank the park committee for supporting the idea of the banners hanging there. From Trails Along the Pipestone, ‘The people of the district wished to honor their war dead of 1914-1918 and purchased a cenotaph and then needed a place to put it. There were a couple of suggestions but Mr. Alf Archer suggested a park where people could visit and the names on the cenotaph would be constantly before the public eye.’ Now one hundred and three years later the faces of many of these same veterans whose names are engraved on the cenotaph or gave of their youth will bring a sense of reality to those who visit of all that was sacrificed.

Please take some time this summer to visit both Reston and Pipestone Memorial Parks, enjoy the beauty they hold. Take time to think not only of the veterans these places were built for but of all who have come before us, the initial caretakers and now the current caretakers and what they are leaving behind for those who will come after.
