Nothing on the internet is real. Yet, nothing in real life escapes its influence. How could something be able to create such a complicated web of misinformation that actively threatens our lives outside of it? What function are we giving immense power to that is causing all of this? The repost, or replication of information online, is the source of most cases of misinformation online.Â
Starting with chain emails, spamming false messages of luck or misfortune that only activates based on how many times the receiver copy and pastes the message to their friends, the repost got its stride virtually. Scary internet moral myths, or Creepypasta, continued the trend of making media with the one goal of having it spread to other screens. The virality of this tool continued onto memes as the internet became a focal point in many people's lives and began to really influence mainstream thought. Now, the internet is heading to a complete collapse as social media is overrun with ai-bot accounts, abusing the repost function to generate attention and validity through the algorithms of the media sites they inhabit.
Is this true because everyone I know reposted it? Are these thoughts and trends popular because of the amount of retweets or because there is an outside force boosting these replications? If we do not approach this subject and face its repercussions, no truth will be discernible any longer, virtually and in person.
