Many of you under 30 might have no clue what Resident Evil 4 is about: it\u2019s perhaps best described as riding a rollercoaster that\u2019s careening off the rails to crash through a row of spectacular haunted houses. What starts as a fairly straightforward rescue mission, with Leon sent into a small Spanish village in search of the US President\u2019s missing daughter Ashley, soon hurtles into a heart-stopping series of battles against giant sea monsters and towering trolls, desperate defenses against crazed hordes in boarded up cabins, outrageous assaults on a heavily fortified castle, skulking sections through shadowy laboratories, explosive minecart chases, and countless run-ins with some truly twisted freaks infected with the mutating Las Plagas parasite, all of which look consistently incredible reimagined on Capcom\u2019s RE Engine (which also powered the last two remakes). The original RE4\u2019s famously flabby final third has been tightened up considerably, and it all builds towards an improved and genuinely imposing final boss fight that took all of my skill and ammo reserves to topple.\u00a0

Survival is just the beginning. Six years have passed since the biological disaster in Raccoon City. Leon S. Kennedy, one of the survivors, tracks the president's kidnapped daughter to a secluded European village, where there is something terribly wrong with the locals.

The characters are outstanding. My favorite "Resident Evil" character was Albert Wesker. He was the Hannibal Lecter of evil geniuses. When he starts making a eerie grin on his face, you know that something bad is going to happen when it comes to flesh-eating zombies and disgusting creatures.

The Bad

Although I had a few problems on how the game starts, here's how the game almost lost its mark:

Resident Evil begins as it always began, but this time takes the player through a stunning pre-rendered forest sequence, graphically quite unlike its stormy precursor. Unlike the FMV that sold the series, this introductory sequence is (hopefully) directed like the horror movie that Resident Evil has spawned. Nervous members of Bravo team search for the remnants of their colleagues' downed chopper, only to find bloody traces of their friends and a mangled wreck. Before long the question of what happened to Alpha team is answered, viciously, by a pack of ravenous, disfigured zombie hounds, which chase the surviving members of the team towards a bizarre mansion in the woods.
