In providing the forecasts for the current study, which were made in September 2022, we have taken into account developments in the global economy following the outbreak of war in Ukraine and the impact of rising inflation. However, significant downside risks still-remain which could lead to growth in 2022 and 2023 being revised down. We currently expect growth, despite strong underlying demand, to be subdued over the course of the second half of 2022 and into 2023 before gaining momentum in the second half of the year and then accelerate over the remainder of the forecast period. We believe the current shortage for certain components and materials, will ease over the second half of 2022 as demand weakens, in line with lower consumer spending and business confidence.
In the context of the global electronics industry East Europe, at US$58.0 billion, accounted for just 3.0% of electronics output in 2020 and held a 4.5% share of the global market at US$84.3 billion. Within Europe the region accounted for 25.3% of electronics output in 2020 and 25.4% of the market.
Production is centred on the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland the three countries accounting for 63.1% of electronics output in 2020. There is also a strong focus on the 3C segments of computing, communications and consumer.
Excluding Russia and the Ukraine, output for the 3C segments amounted to US$37.8 billion in 2020, 71.0% of electronics output, and although output declined by 1.3% demand for products in response to the lockdown, including the major shift to working from home, boosted demand during the year and limited the fall. With restrictions remaining in place across Europe in the first half of 2021 demand has remained buoyant, in particular for laptops, with output in the 3C segments forecast to post growth of 6.9% for the year as a whole.
