In providing the forecasts for the current study, which were made in September 2022, we have taken into account developments in the global economy following the outbreak of war in Ukraine and the impact of rising inflation. However, significant downside risks still-remain which could lead to growth in 2022 and 2023 being revised down. We currently expect growth, despite strong underlying demand, to be subdued over the course of the second half of 2022 and into 2023 before gaining momentum in the second half of the year and then accelerate over the remainder of the forecast period. We believe the current shortage for certain components and materials, will ease over the second half of 2022 as demand weakens, in line with lower consumer spending and business confidence.
Americas
Within the Yearbook series the Americas covers Brazil and the three countries making-up North America.
In 2021, electronics production in North America amounted to US$328 billion in 2021 with the US domination accounting for 78% of the total. Mexico, which acts as the low-cost production base for the region, accounted for 19% while Canada accounted for only 3%. After posting modest growth of 0.5% in 2019, electronics production in the region declined by 2.5% in 2020 before rebounding in 2021 with growth of 7.8%. Growth is expected to ease to 3.5%, in 2022 in-line with the slowdown in the North American and global economy.
Japan
After three years of declining output between 2018 and 2020 electronics production posted strong growth of 8.4% in 2021 led by a 13.7% increase in component production and a more modest 2.6% increase in electronics equipment output. Based on official figures for the first six months of the year overall electronics output, is forecast to decline by 2.8% in 2022 a 3.2% rise in component production offset by a 9.9% decline in electronics equipment output.
Asia
In 2021, the production of electronics equipment and components in Asia was valued at US$1,471 billion of which components accounted for 40%. Electronics equipment production, which accounted for 60% of the total, is dominated by computing and communications.
China dominates electronics production in the region with total electronics output valued at US$872 billion in 2021. South Korea and Taiwan, with their strong focus on semiconductors, both reported electronics production of over US$100 billion in 2021 at US$151 billion and US$121 billion, respectively while Singapore with output of US$87 billion and Malaysia US$71 billion also benefited from an established semiconductor industry. Vietnam, which due to its low-costs has seen explosive growth in recent years, is a major centre for the production of mobile phones with overall electronics output of US$76 billion in 2021. Electronics production in India was valued at US$31 billion in 2021 growth being supported by government incentives as the country looks to establish itself as a major global manufacturing hub.
