This is not about the closure of the road to through traffic, which happened long ago in the 1980s - that is a separate issue, this is about the latest closure of public parking access on the Road.
Montague Street in Sheffield has been closed to vehicles parking access for several years. It was originally presented as a temporary closure to allow for park improvements - but those works were completed long ago. The road remains blocked, and now the council is preparing to make this closure permanent.
This decision is being taken without meaningful public consultation and disproportionately affects people who need level, short-distance access to the adjacent park, Sunderland Street GP surgery, and local pharmacy. Many elderly and mobility-limited residents, including those recovering from surgery or illness, relied on this quiet cul-de-sac.
We believe it’s time to act. Help us call on Sheffield City Council to reopen Montague Street and restore fair, inclusive access to essential local services.
Update – October 2025
Sheffield City Council has now formally admitted that the 2025 Montague Street closure order was unlawful and that there was no valid public safety reason to keep the road blocked. Despite this, the bollards and double yellow lines remain in place more than two weeks after the admission and five weeks after a formal complaint was submitted.
The Council has promised to reopen the road “as soon as practicable” but has provided no timetable for doing so. It has also confirmed that parking fines issued under the expired orders must be refunded, though no refund process has yet been announced.
We are continuing to press for immediate physical reopening, full disclosure of internal decision records under the Environmental Information Regulations (EIR), and accountability for the councillor lobbying that led to the unlawful closure. (see press release in dowloads page.)
