The uses the subsurface will only increase and diversify with the continued green energy transition, and therefore the management of the subsurface is a pressing issue.
As the coordinator of the GeoConnect³d project, I have helped to develop and test a new methodological approach to prepare and disclose geological information online in a more useful and understandable way for policy support and subsurface management. This innovative bottom-up approach the two concepts of structural framework and geomanifestations to increase the geological understanding of an area, with the goal to provide a coherent geological context for evaluating subsurface applications and resolving subsurface management issues. The resulting GIS-based framework is the first of its kind and represents an unprecedented effort of geoscientific data gathering and harmonisation throughout Europe.
All results are publicly available on the project's website.
