Military history fans will find it really cool that RELLIS is located on a former military airbase where fighter pilots were trained to fight in WW2 and the Korean War. Photo: F-80/T-33 Shooting Star; T-33 was a 2-seater version of the F-80, for pilot training.
Fighter pilot Buzz Aldrin was a flight instructor here during the Korean War. In Korea, he flew 66 combat missions and downed two enemy MiG-15 aircraft. Later, he became an astronaut and was the second man to stand on the moon, July 21, 1969. For his military service in Korea, Aldrin was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses and three Air Medals.
Buzz Aldrin, a Presbyterian elder, privately took communion on the moon, making him the first person to hold a lunar religious ceremony. Reflecting on the moonwalk, Aldrin remarked: "In this one moment, the world came together in peace for all mankind".
