"One of the greatest honors of my life was winning the Heisman Trophy in 2005," the statement released by the New Orleans Saints reads. "For me, it was a dream come true. But I know that the Heisman is not mine alone. Far from it. I know that my victory was made possible by the discipline and hard work of my teammates, the steady guidance of my coaches, the inspiration of the fans, and the unconditional love of my family and friends. And I know that any young man fortunate enough to win the Heisman enters into a family of sorts. Each individual carries the legacy of the award and each one is entrusted with its good name.

"For the rest of my days, I will continue to strive to demonstrate through my actions and words that I was deserving of the confidence placed in me by the Heisman Trophy Trust," Bush's statement continues. "I would like to begin in this effort by turning a negative situation into a positive one by working with the Trustees to establish an educational program which will assist student-athletes and their families avoid some of the mistakes that I made. I am determined to view this event as an opportunity to help others and to advance the values and mission of the Heisman Trophy Trust."

It's the first time college football's top award was returned by a recipient. One of the few guidelines given to Heisman Trophy voters is that a player must be in compliance with NCAA rules to be eligible for the trophy.

"I definitely want it, I definitely want it,'' said Young, who guided Texas to the national championship. "But he won it fair and square definitely, and it's much respect to Reggie, man. He had a great career and he's already won a Super Bowl before me. I'm already mad about that.

Allegations that Bush and his family had received hundreds of thousands of dollars in gifts from two California-based marketing agents were first reported by Yahoo Sports in September 2006, months after Bush had already been drafted No. 2 overall by the Saints.

One of the marketing agents, Lloyd Lake, sued Bush, trying to recoup nearly $300,000 in cash and gifts. Bush was supposed to give a deposition in the case but never did and eventually the case was settled with Bush never having given his side of the story publicly.

"It is my hope that this situation serves as a teachable moment to all involved, especially for the young athletes and university and high school administrators of tomorrow," Carroll said in a statement.

"I think it's a sad day, that's the way I feel about it," said former Nebraska quarterback Eric Crouch, who won the Heisman in 2001. "Having to actually be the first time in the history of the award that someone has given it back ... I don't know if he actually had to. Maybe this is on his terms."

"It doesn't matter if he gives it back. Everyone still knows Reggie Bush was the best player that year. Look at the runs. He was clearly the best player," former Nebraska flanker and 1972 Heisman winner Johnny Rodgers said.

But it was Young who came away with the biggest prize. He had one of the greatest games in college football history and scored the winning touchdown with 19 seconds left in Texas' 41-38 victory at the Rose Bowl. Meanwhile, Bush's most memorable play from the title game was an ill-advised lateral that resulted in a USC turnover.

"I don't think of that season any different," said current USC coach Lane Kiffin, who was an assistant on the 2005 team. "I think of that season as a great year until the last six minutes of the game, when we had a two-score lead and blew it away."

As for Bush's decision to forfeit the Heisman, Kiffin said: "I'll respect any decision that Reggie made and I'm sure it was extremely hard for him. Talking to him earlier in the process -- I didn't speak to him today -- this has been extremely difficult on him and is something that has hurt him a lot. This is just more icing on the cake for him."

It was stupid stuff, it was selfish stuff, and it landed the Trojans on an obscene probation that cost them their identity for a decade. They were stripped of wins, stripped of scholarships, stripped of their soul, and it showed.

Reggie Jackson:

Because a lot of doctors assume that, well, if I give this Black person a specific protocol to follow because of this condition they have, well they're not gonna follow it anyway, so I'm not gonna even put them into that space. Studies have shown that Blacks who need, you know, specialized treatment and so you have to get your doctor to say, okay, I'm gonna, you know, send you to this specialist to look at this issue that you're having, that's much less likely to happen if you're a Black person than if you're a white person, and even when you're put in those positions, you are much less likely to receive the same level of care, the same level of concern, and it's just a part of our lived experience. We live in an unhealthy society that stresses us out. We live in a society that even when we go to medical practitioners and even mental health practitioners to get the help that we need, we don't receive the same level of care, so we're receiving inferior healthcare and we're living in environments that are heavily polluted. And then when you think about poverty, what poverty does to people, it leads to more crime in those communities, right? So we're much more likely to die, Black men in particular, we're much more likely to be murdered at a young age. And so we are not gonna live to be 70, whatever, right? Because there's a good chance that depending on where you grow up, the environment that you're around, there's a good chance that you may end up, you know, being murdered before you reach that age. So the life expectancy has been a big difference. But this is the saddest part of it, and this is prior to COVID. We don't know what it's gonna look like when we look at COVID, but prior to COVID, there was a study done and it showed that around the country, the difference between how long Blacks and whites live, that gap was shrinking across the country. It was getting smaller, so we were seeing some improvement, right? Everywhere except one state. You wanna guess which state was not seeing improvement? Wisconsin, it was getting worse. The gap was growing wider in Wisconsin. We are the only state out of the 50 states where the gap was getting worse instead of getting better. And that says a lot about, you know, where we live in terms of how it impacts our health.

Reggie: The community is so important musically, there was music all around me. So, it was only natural that my parents said "Okay, you got to go take piano lessons." So, I went to downtown to the department stores to take Saturday lessons all the time and that was the beginning of music career for me.

Reggie: I had a cousin who had a band in Philadelphia named Charlie Biddle, and he was a great bass player so he would rehearse his band at my place. I would always be standing by listening to the band, and that was part of my nurturing. And he would call me over and say "Come here boy, let me show you how the bass feels." And he would stand me up on the chair and put the bass in my hand and put the bow in my hand and tell me how to do it. And I liked that sound; I liked that vocal cord. So, I was drawn to it.

Jo: You have played with everybody, practically. I don't have time to name everyone you've played with, but I would just like to have you talk about a couple and one would be John Coltrane because you were part of the John Coltrane quartet and part of some of jazz's legendary recordings like Live at the Village Vanguard. And I'm just wondering what you recall, what you remember about being part of that band.

During the 60s, like, people were opening up more. The world was opening up more. Our minds were opening more and we were influenced more by different cultures around the globe. That's where the music went. Those are the ingredients that we call jazz.

Jo: You were the go-to person for Blue Note. As you worked as a supporting artist for all these artists, I'd like you to talk about the kind of strengths that a supporting artist needs to bring to various groups because it's so different from a musician like the first violinist of the symphony and all respect to the first violinist of any symphony, but they're playing the same notes that they play, with jazz, the music known as jazz, it is something different. You're expected to be able to do what Roscoe Mitchell calls spontaneous composition. So, can you talk about what really is needed when you're the supporting artist? e24fc04721
