Jazmin Jenay Johnson is a multidisciplinary artist, director, and photographer who describes her artistry as Southern Fried Minimalism, a fusion of her experiences growing up in America’s nether regions, told through a universal lens. Whether through still photography or motion pictures, her intention remains the same: to craft visual narratives that resonate deeply and provoke feeling.
Her work as a photographer has been recognized by the Black Image Center/Getty Museum Photography Residency, where she explored storytelling through portraiture and documentary imagery. This same visual sensibility informs her filmmaking, bringing a painterly, intentional approach to the screen.
In 2020, Jazmin wrote, directed, and starred in her debut short film, Sounds of War, a powerful meditation on memory, sound, and survival. Produced by Beats by Dre and Apple, the film later received distribution on STARZ, Amazon Prime, and Hulu, gaining widespread visibility and reaching audiences across major platforms. That same year, she founded Blkflmmkr, a brand created to celebrate Black creatives on all sides of the camera—ensuring that directors, cinematographers, editors, and crew members receive the same recognition as those in front of the lens.
Through her work, Jazmin aims to bring to life the visuals she wants to see in the world. Serving as a blank canvas for God’s creativity while immersing herself in the films, filmmakers, and creators who inspire her. For her, storytelling is a calling, one she hopes to explore for as long as the journey allows.
"I LOVE THE DISCOVERY OF NEW MOLES ON MY BODY. IN A WAY, THEY MAKE ME FEEL CLOSER TO MY MOTHER. THESE BEAUTY MARKS HAVE GRACED HER BACK FOR AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER. I'VE TRACED THEM, STUDIED THEM, AND NOW - IN OUR GARDEN, WITH MY FATHER NEARBY, I'VE IMMORTALIZED THEM."
