These two hitches represent distinct philosophies in towing hardware. The REESE 84116 is built like a tank, focusing on raw strength and a larger receiver size for those who might tow campers or boats occasionally. It is a heavy-duty option designed for vehicles that demand higher tongue weight ratings. In contrast, the Draw-Tite 36642 is a precision-engineered Class 2 unit tailored specifically for compact SUVs. It offers a sleeker profile with a smaller 1-1/4 inch receiver, ideal for light trailers, bike racks, and cargo carriers where extreme towing power isn't required.
The choice between these two often comes down to the specific vehicle platform and the actual weight of what you intend to pull. For new drivers stepping into the world of towing, understanding this distinction is critical. One product serves as a workhorse for medium-duty tasks, while the other acts as a nimble helper for light-duty chores. Picking the wrong class can lead to installation issues or, worse, safety concerns regarding load limits. This comparison strips away the marketing noise to focus on the hard facts: steel construction, weight ratings, receiver dimensions, and the intended vehicle fitment. Whether you are upgrading an older model or equipping a brand-new crossover, the data tells a clear story about which unit belongs under your bumper.
• Best for Volvo XC60 owners who plan to tow small travel trailers or utility trailers regularly.
• Best for Equinox and Terrain owners needing a simple, non-intrusive hitch for weekend errands.
• Key Difference: The REESE unit handles double the tongue weight of the Draw-Tite and features a larger opening for accessories, while the Draw-Tite focuses on a custom fit for newer GM crossovers with a lower profile.
• Who Each Pick Is For: Choose the REESE if your driving habits include occasional heavy lifting; choose the Draw-Tite if your towing needs are strictly light and your vehicle is a standard compact SUV.
The REESE 84116 is not a compromise; it is a dedicated Class 3 trailer hitch engineered for serious utility. If you own a 2014 through 2017 Volvo XC60, this unit is designed to integrate seamlessly with the vehicle's frame. What stands out immediately is the capacity rating. You aren't just looking at hauling a single bicycle rack; you are looking at the potential to pull a small enclosed utility trailer, a jet ski, or perhaps even a very lightweight travel camper.
The construction of the REESE 84116 reflects its heavy-duty purpose. It utilizes an all-welded design, which means there are no bolted joints compromising the structural integrity at stress points. This method of assembly ensures that the hitch can withstand the rigors of road abuse without flexing or failing. The manufacturer subjects every unit to fatigue and stress testing, a process that simulates years of wear and tear in a controlled environment before the product ever leaves the factory. This rigorous testing regime ensures that the metal holds firm when you are accelerating onto a highway with a full load behind you. Furthermore, the inclusion of a Metal Shield protective coating provides a layer of defense against corrosion, which is essential for a component exposed to road salt, rain, and debris year-round.

However, this strength comes with physical trade-offs. Installing it will require a lift or at least a very strong jack stand, and the extra mass can make removal difficult if you ever decide to take it off for winter storage or aesthetic reasons. Additionally, the 2-inch receiver tube is significantly larger than the 1-1/4 inch options seen on lighter hitches. While this allows for a broader array of accessories, it also means the hitch protrudes slightly more from the rear of the vehicle. If you are a new driver who primarily uses their Volvo for city commuting and only occasionally needs to move a few boxes, this level of capacity might be overkill. But for the driver who values versatility and wants a hitch that won't break a sweat under moderate loads, the REESE 84116 is a compelling choice. It meets and exceeds V-5, CSA, and SAE J684 standards, ensuring that safety is not an afterthought but a core design principle.
The Draw-Tite 36642 takes a different approach, focusing on precision fitment and ease of use for a specific demographic of vehicles. Designed exclusively for the 2018-2025 Chevrolet Equinox and the 2018-2024 GMC Terrain (excluding certain diesel models), this hitch is a masterclass in custom engineering. Unlike universal designs that try to force a fit, the Draw-Tite is built according to the exact manufacturer specifications of these GM platforms. This results in a cleaner look that integrates better with the rear fascia of the vehicle, often leaving less gap between the hitch and the bumper compared to more generic solutions.
In terms of performance, the Draw-Tite 36642 is a solid Class 2 unit. While these numbers are lower than the REESE counterpart, they are perfectly adequate for the vast majority of compact SUV owners. Most people in this segment are not hauling heavy boats or large campers; they are likely transporting a small pop-up camper, a motorcycle, a utility trailer for landscaping, or a cargo carrier for groceries and gear. The 1-1/4 inch square receiver is the standard for this class and accommodates the most common accessories found in the automotive market today. The hitch features a two-part black powder coat finish, which offers robust protection against rust and corrosion, ensuring longevity even in harsh winter climates where road salt is prevalent.
The weight of this unit is another defining characteristic. This makes the installation process less physically demanding and the overall footprint on the vehicle smaller. However, buyers must be aware of a critical limitation: this hitch is NOT suitable for use with Weight Distribution systems. If your towing plans involve heavier loads that would typically require a sway control or weight distribution bar to stabilize the vehicle, this hitch cannot handle that setup. It is strictly for straight-line towing within Class 2 limits. For a new driver who is just learning the ropes of towing a small trailer behind a Chevy Equinox, the Draw-Tite 36642 strikes an excellent balance between capability and simplicity. It gets the job done without the bulk or complexity of a Class 3 system, making it an ideal entry-level choice for safe, reliable towing.
• Best for Maximum Capacity → REESE 84116: If your primary goal is to maximize the towing potential of your vehicle, the 4000-pound gross weight limit and 400-pound tongue weight offer a significant margin of safety over the Draw-Tite.
• Best for Vehicle Fitment → Draw-Tite 36642: If you drive a newer Chevrolet Equinox or GMC Terrain, the Draw-Tite offers a custom-designed fit that aligns perfectly with the factory mounting points, whereas the REESE is not compatible with these models.
• Best for Accessory Variety → REESE 84116: The 2-inch receiver accepts a much wider range of hitch accessories, including larger bike racks, cargo baskets, and ball mounts, compared to the restricted 1-1/4 inch opening of the Draw-Tite.
• Best for Corrosion Resistance → Tie (Different Coatings): Both units feature high-quality protective finishes—REESE uses a Metal Shield coating while Draw-Tite uses a two-part black powder coat—ensuring both will resist rust effectively over time.
• Best for New Drivers on a Budget → Draw-Tite 36642: Generally, Class 2 hitches like the Draw-Tite are priced more accessibly and are sufficient for the low-stakes towing needs typical of beginners, though prices fluctuate.
• Best for Road Safety Testing → Both Meet Standards: Both products undergo rigorous fatigue and stress testing and meet or exceed V-5 and SAE J684 standards, so neither compromises on fundamental safety protocols.
• Best for Weight Distribution Use → REESE 84116: Only the REESE unit is robust enough to potentially support weight distribution systems, whereas the Draw-Tite explicitly forbids their use.
After weighing the specifications and intended use cases, I would personally recommend the REESE 84116 for anyone who values long-term versatility and wants a hitch that grows with them. The all-welded construction and 2-inch receiver future-proof the investment, allowing for heavier accessories later on. However, if you drive a 2018+ Chevy Equinox or GMC Terrain, my recommendation shifts entirely to the Draw-Tite 36642 simply because the REESE does not fit your vehicle. For those specific models, the Draw-Tite is the superior choice due to its custom fit and appropriate Class 2 rating. Ultimately, the right choice depends on your car, but for pure capability and durability, the REESE 84116 stands out as the more robust engineering solution.
You must verify your vehicle year before purchasing, as fitment changes with newer generations.
Absolutely not. The manufacturer explicitly states that this hitch is not suitable for use with weight distribution systems, limiting its use to standard Class 2 towing applications.
The additional weight of the REESE unit may make it slightly more challenging to lift into place during installation.
Both brands state that their products undergo rigorous fatigue and stress testing and meet or exceed industry standards like V-5 and SAE J684, indicating comparable levels of manufacturing quality and safety assurance.
