Different Ways to Reduce Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity can be painful. It can restrict you from hot and cold foods, sugary treats and even exposing your teeth against the wind coming at it. The most common reasons for the tooth sensitivity involve wearing of tooth enamel on the crown or cementum which protects the roots. As a result, the dentin gets exposed along with the nerves which keep the tooth alive.

If you are suffering from tooth sensitivity, there are a few things that you can do to reduce this sensitivity.

Toothpaste for sensitive teeth

There are several toothpastes available that are made to reduce tooth sensitivity. The active ingredient in those toothpastes that helps in this sensitivity reduction is potassium nitrate. Although, these toothpastes do not work for everyone but most would agree that patients can start from here. Here, it’s also important the way toothpaste is being used. Using it for a few days and then discontinuing the use is not the right way. Instead, you need to continue it for a while to start getting the effects.

The way you brush

The way you brush has much to do with the tooth sensitivity. If you have the habit of brushing too vigorously, it can make the tooth enamel to wear out. Although, the way you brush should be sufficient to clean your teeth from every side, it doesn’t really mean that you should start applying unusual force while brushing the teeth. Furthermore, the toothbrush with soft bristles should be used for brushing the teeth. The benefit of using such toothbrush is that it doesn’t only prevent the tooth enamel to wear out but it also reaches the tiny gaps between teeth, making the cleaning more convenient.

Foods and drinks with acidic content

Acidic foods and fruit juices are loved by everyone. But, these foods offer great hostility against the teeth and their enamel. It doesn’t really mean that you should stop the consumption of such foods as these foods can be beneficial for health from certain perspectives. However, you will have to make sure that consumption of these foods is not hurting your dental health. It can be done by following certain precautions. For instance, you can brush 20 minutes after consuming these foods. Don’t brush prior to the consumption of these foods or you will be making the tooth enamel to wear out.

Avoid teeth grinding

Teeth grinding a terrible habit that can make the teeth to get reduced in size vertically. The main causes of this habit include mental stress and bruxism while sleeping. Although, stopping this habit right away might not be possible, you can ask your dentist for the treatment options. Certain mouth guards are made to avoid teeth from damaged due to bruxism.
