I recently rediscovered my love of audiobooks. My current job allows me to listen to audiobooks, podcasts, etc. while I work. At first, everything was going well. I was getting through my backlog of audiobooks from monthly credits.

Is there a cheaper alternative to audible? Perhaps a service where I just pay X amount and it grants me unlimited streaming rights? I don't care if I actually own the books. I just need something for more high-volume listeners that doesn't cost me an arm and leg. Once I get to less popular books, I can use my public library. Sadly, they are always checked out on the ones I really want to read right now.

I will be frank here, most of my relatives and friends are somehow extremely against audio books and they believe that it is an abomination for normal people, and they are exclusively created for blinds and other physically challenged. To some extent, I was influenced by them for a long time and didn't bother trying any audio books. However, only recently, I don't know why but I decided to actually give it a try (I am reading books only for a year now, so I am not an old reader). I picked up the 10th Anniversary Edition of American Gods by Neil Gaiman, and I have to be brutally honest here, it is phenomenal! All the voices are extremely well done and Neil Gaiman as the central narrator is just outstanding.

I am beginning to think that the other audio books might be of similar quality so I am planning to get a few more. For some unexplainable reasons, I never really liked reading Stephen King's writings but I do like his stories (I saw a few movies), and I am planning to pick up the audio books and give those a try. I am not sure why my friends and relatives have such narrow minded approach on audio books but I do regret following their words instead of relying on my wit.

Threads and top level comments here should be related to audiobooks. This can include stories recordings of books or other less traditional style audiobooks such as those told via podcast, radio dramas or other audio media.

We welcome authors, narrators etc giving away copies of books, or promoting their books. However to avoid the spamming of books by a small group we are limiting these posts to once per week per reddit user.

I love audiobooks. I listen to them to while i'm working, or driving, or playing video games (not all three of those at once of course), and they are a great way to consume stories. Some of these are of course higher quality than others. What's been the best one you've listened to? This can include what you thought of the story, but not just that. How was the voice acting, and editing, and maybe even sound effects?

For me, the best one I have listened to is called The Night Swim by Megan Goldin. It's a powerful about a true crime podcast host reporting on a rape trial. During the parts of the story where she is hosting her show, they actually make it sound like you're listening to a news podcast. There is even this one scene where she is playing a recording of someone she got off of her phone, and it sounds like it's sounds like a real recording, complete with the background noise. The whole thing felt more like a radio drama than a normal audio book.

I'm looking to get a dramatized audio book but I don't want to have a subscription. Are there any platforms where I can just buy the audio book and have it saved as a file to my phone? Or do I have to subscribe somewhere? I am only finding subscription based platforms right now

I have a fairly large collection of audio books saved on my personal server. Is there a way for me to play the audio books via my echo dot? Would playing them as MP3s be the best solution? My issue with that is the app/program wouldn't save my position. Trying to scrub through a 25 hour audiobook on a 6 inch screen isnt ideal. Surely someone has created a workaround that would have an audiobook experience formatted for MP3s and other random audio file types... But finding something like that requires some recommendations and pointing in the right direction.

Could you suggest some extraordinary works with captivating voice actors? It would be nice to have a sublime experience:) Recommend, please, some books that can leave long-lasting memories and traces or change an individual's worldview. For example, I enjoyed "Le Petit Prince" (A.Saint-Exupry) by French voice actor Bernard Giraudeau and "New Scientist: The Origin of (Almost) Everything"(S.Hawking),narrated by David Thorpe. But I ask in general, any genre is welcome. It can be even bio. From fairy tales and fantasy to quantum physics. Any European language. Any age.

I have not spent much time with audio books up to this point, but I recently discovered that I can have two books going at the same time if I listen to one and read the other. Project Hail Mary seemed to be an ideal book to hear, and I would love some suggestions for similar books. The first person narrative and the narrator (Ray Porter) both contributed significantly to my enjoyment of it in audio format. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I understand that a lot of programming books will have examples of code that don't necessarily read out loud well in audiobook format, but I drive a truck for work, and often listen to podcasts on the road.

Currently listening to Quidditch through the ages and I'm loving the background sound effects and different voices. I've done a few searches and several posts say that the star wars audiobooks have the sounds and actors, but I was wondering if you have to have watched all the movies first before listening to them? I've only seen like 3 or 4 of the movies so far.

Also, if anyone can recommend any other audiobooks with sound effects as well? Typically I have a hard time paying attention when I'm trying to listen to audiobooks but the sound effects really help keep my attention.

Hello! I'm a newbie into audio-books area, even tho' I read physical/electronic books constantly. I appreciate and love the idea of listening to a book, especially if it's narrated nicely, but I feel like I can't follow the script somehow...

I tried a couple of audio-books recently, and I've started with something for personal growth - I resisted no longer than 10 mins in 2 days listening to it. I feel like I can't focus on it, I'm missing some details that later on are mentioned again and I feel lost in sync information. I can't do anything else if I'm committing to listen to an audio-book because I lose focus instantly. After this experience, I chose the Godfather audio-book just because in there I know the story so well that I can imagine where the action is happening, where are the characters and so on without being 100% focused on the audio.

The real question is: How you guys do it? Is this something normal (for a beginner at least) to lose focus and can't follow up the audio? I will get better at this focus type of thing if I'll continue listening? Any tips and tricks will help a lot.

I've come to notice in recent years I've been almost exclusively listening to books in the audio format where before I was a heavy book reader. Now I find I get more enjoyment from the spoken word instead of the written word. Narrators like Kate Reading and Michael Kramer are just so good at immersing me in the story's they read. What is your story conveyance of choice?

So I've just finished listening to Neil gaimans sandman and I loved it, it couldn't stop listening either the sound effects of things the music and different voice actors, it was my firs audio book and once i finshed it I wanted to get another audio book so I got loved of the flies and...well I'm not that into I know its a good book but it's the one same narrator doing all of it and I just can't get into it, so my question anyone of any outher audio books like that wound effects that go along and music, different voice actors for characters ect or did I just luck out with my first audio book and have my expectations to high lol

I have been listening to more audio books lately. Mostly nonfiction, but some fiction books too. But I have the problem of sometimes "zoning out" while listening to an audiobook, and then forgetting to listen to the book while it is playing. Does this happen to you, and do you have any tips for reducing how often this happens?

I'm seeking a recommendation for an iPhone app for my wife to listen to some old audiobooks that I already own in mp3 format (I have the files stored on my computer and can move them onto her iPhone with the "Files" app). I currently have the BookPlayer app for her, but it has lost her current spot and jumped to the beginning of her book twice in the last 24 hours, so I'd like to switch to a more reliable app. Here's my requirements:

Any suggestions of an Audiobook Subscription service that has unlimited audiobooks? I go through audio books so fast (usually a book within 2-3 days), and I don't want to buy every book I listen to. My library just has way too long of wait/hold times for books on Libby. Everyone I want to read is like a 2 month wait.

In a non-inflammatory way, why do you like to listen to audiobooks? I've heard a few before but I just don't enjoy them nearly as much as I do reading itself. I would love to hear the opinions of followers of this sub as to why/where you like to listen to them?

I have not been able to read as much as I would like and I wont be able to in the coming months because I will be pretty busy so instead I want to begin to listen to more audiobooks. I have tried amazons free trial twice and listened to a few but $14.95/month for one credit seems a little bit pricey so I would like to find a cheaper alternative. I see that the kindle version of books is usually a little bit cheaper, is it worth buying a kindle for it? Besides amazon where can you get audio books?

Recently I had a friend mention to me that they'll use both for the same book. When driving to and from work they will listen to the audiobook. Once at home they'll get the physical copy out to read. e24fc04721
