I'm trying to recover an SD card, and when I try to run Recuva, it immediately pops up the error "Invalid Drive Size". I tried doing the deep scan, and got the same result. I'm not sure what exactly the problem is with the card - I had it in my phone, working fine, then all of a sudden it just stopped working.

Has the file system been changed at some time, or is the card still as it was when you got it, before it got messed up? scan your drive with another recovery software and see if the data is recoverable by previewing your files.

Hi, My SanDisk SDHC card suddenly says that it's needs to be formatted when I connected it to the pc or in the camera. I try to format it, but it says 'The format could not be completed' I have several photos on there that I haven't backed up!

If it's only a few photographs you're after getting back, have a look at "MiniTool Power Data Recovery". The free version has the limitation of only enabling the recovery of 1gb of data, but that should be OK for you.

I've just had a look at it on my XP machine, and it does have a "Quick Format" option which is the one you need to try as it will initialize the file system but won't overwrite your data. If this works OK, you should then be able to scan that card OK.

Shame about the SD Formatter, which strangely pops up a similar error discussed on here quite recently, and that is an SD card being flagged by Windows as write protected when it isn't. But I'm digressing.

There are only two ways basically to get those files off your card, and that is to use programs which can scan for and recover "Raw" data successfully, or to do a "Quick Format" on the card and then use normal recovery programs like Recuva.

PhotoRec failing to find files is disappointing, as is the inability of that card to accept being formatted. I'm confident that we'll fix the card itself when the time comes, but the fix method will wipe all data off the card which we don't want at present.

Post back how you get on with that, and if you have no joy we'll have a go at fixing the card, unless any of the other guys on here can suggest something I may have overlooked in way of recovering your files. Trying to fix your card would not involve the "fix" I mention above, but would simply be using free software to check the file system, or using the same free software to try and fix the MBR. (Master Boot Record).

We'll have to go in a different direction now, and that is to try and "fix" the card by using one of quite a few options available, but firstly can I ask how important are the photographs you're trying to recover?

Yes, Windows does detect the card...tried what you have suggested but when I click on 'Check Now' I get the message 'The disk check could not be performed because the disk is not formatted. Would you like to format the disk' Obviously I have tried formatting from this message but still no joy!

When you downloaded PhotoRec, the download would have included it's partner in crime "TestDisk". Fire up TestDisk with your card in the slot. We'll use TestDisk for the first option as it won't modify the card.

And the Microsoft Hotfix for this card reader problem has never worked. If you have SP3 and try the hotfix, windows will give you the message that the hotfix is included in SP3 and will refuse to install it.

As it happens, I went through this wrong capacity display thing with two flash drives of my own, and the cause turned out to be that the missing capacity was being picked up by windows as "unallocated space". The first card I binned as it was early in my education, but the second one I fixed with partitioning software. Delete the remaining recognized partition to create a full drive of unallocated space, and then simply create a new partition.

We never want to face the loss of our important data due to accidental deletion, hardware malfunction, or any other reason. So whenever we are stuck in the situation of data loss, using a data recovery tool to recover the lost data is a smart choice. Among millions of tools out there, Recuva is one of the most popular data recovery tools for getting back deleted data on Windows computers for free.

Recuva from CCleaner (its official website) is a data recovery tool that is designed to recover accidentally deleted files, lost files during a computer crash, or any other files that are marked as deleted. Recuva restores deleted files from Windows PC, SD card, USB drives, MP3 player, and other external storage devices. It is designed specifically for personal use purposes.

The same as most data recovery tools, the operation is pretty easy. Recuva only requires a few simple clicks to complete the whole recovery process. Yet it seems unfriendly to users since it's hard to find where to customize the install location. The following images show how to choose the different hard drive to install Recuva:

Since Recuva has a major con of not recovering all the files as expected, you may want to find a better recovery tool. AnyRecover presents as a great alternative to it. The same as Recuva, AnyRecover is a professional data recovery tool that can perform in-depth scanning and restore lost, deleted, or corrupted files from any storage device. It supports more than 1000+ file types. (Windows 11 supported)

The above Recuva review presents Recuva as a handy tool when simple data recovery is required. It takes a short time to complete a deep scan and can easily find your lost files. But it may fail to recover some files that are recently deleted. If you have lost some important files, then maybe you can give the free version a try. But if it fails to recover your files, or what you're looking for is a data recovery tool for Mac, then Anyrecover can be a great choice.

I'm currently using Recuva to recover some files from an external NTFS disk. It finds the files I'm interested in during it's analysis phase (when tools like test-disk fail to find them at all) and reports them as "Not-deleted" and a big green marker to signify 100% chance of recovery. However when it tries to recover the files I get a "the system could not find the file specified" message. Is there any easy way to recover non-deleted files off of a disc that I can no longer simply access through explorer?

Here is another list of top 10 recovery utilities. I tried Recuva on an SD card and it only recovered something that I deleted long time ago. PhotoRec, however, recovered the files that magically disappeared from my card. Just for comparison: Recuva found some 130 files, while PhotoRec found over 700 (after I moved the executable to another drive on my computer).

Which leads to three questions:1 Are there any further steps that can be taken to recover the other 4000 missing image files?2 Is there any way of compressing the very large file so as to be able to restore it?3 This event having spurred my curiosity about data recovery, can anyone recommend concise beginner resource material to learn about it?

What is Recuva? Recuva is a recovery tool made by Piriform Software for Windows, the same team who created the well-known computer cleaning application, CCleaner. It boasts the ability to recover lost or deleted files of any file type from any rewritable form of storage media.
