When I saw the announcement for Microfest on Instagram, I got insanely excited. In the ~year that I've lived in Missoula, I'd never heard of a DIY event this size, not to mention that it's free and held at a skatepark. I had to know more. Thankfully, the band behind the event (NIGHTWITCH) was willing to do an interview:
Hi, thanks for the interview! Do you mind introducing yourself?
- My name is Sam Kaley, I am one of the guitar players in Nightwitch and I play synths in ModularHaze.
Where did the idea for Microfest come from?
- We threw a show at Mobash last summer with Cosmic Sans and it went great. I knew the longest days of summer were coming and wanted to do it again. I just threw up a quick announcement on Instagram and told bands to DM me if they wanted to play. Within 12 hours we had almost 15 bands.
Why’d you decide to use Mobash as a venue spot?
- It’s like a “state your date and go for it” kind of a place, no red tape, just DIY music and skating!
Do you hope to make this an annual event, or is it a one-off?
- Yes, we are actually thinking of doing 2 per year, either summer and fall or summer and winter. We are already working logistics for the next one. We want to land an indoor venue if possible for the next one.
What are you most excited for?
- Playing and watching the bands first and foremost! It’s nice to be able to feel involved with such a good scene in town.
Anything else we should know?
- Please please please, go to Monks after Mobash and support the two Bands from Bozeman, Goochslam and Rocky Fall, along with local up and comers Calamity Cowboy.
Catch MicroFest at Mobash Skatepark on Saturday, June 24th from noon to 9 PM, and then the afterparty at Monk’s Bar starting at 10 PM ($5 cover).
