Penney M. Gilbert, PhD

Primary Affiliations:

    • Assistant Professor, Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, University of Toronto.

Interests:

Dr. Penney Gilbert’s research program is focused on skeletal muscle regeneration with an emphasis on strategies that boost the endogenous repair capacity of the tissue. Skeletal muscle regeneration is driven by a small endogenous cell population, termed satellite stem cells, that are guided through the repair process by physical features of the tissue and biomolecules produced by the many support cells in the tissue. To meet her research goals her team uses two complementary approaches: 1. They engineer human skeletal muscle tissue culture models to study endogenous repair and to test promising therapies; and 2. They study satellite stem cell mechanobiology to uncover fundamental mechanisms guiding stem cell fate transitions.
