Matheus Wiest, PhD

ReCon Principal Investigator

Primary Affiliations:

    • Postdoctoral fellow, Neural Engineering and Therapeutics Team, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute / UHN

Interests:

With a BSc in Physical Education and a MSc in Human Movement Sciences, Dr. Wiest focused the initial phases of his career on understanding sports biomechanics and human postural control. During his PhD at the University of Alberta, his main focus moved towards improving the use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation for rehabilitation and training. This followed by a one-year postdoctoral fellowship where he studied phototherapy as a method to reduce muscle fatigue and the effects of aging and strength training in the capacity of generating force. Dr. Wiest has served in the Teaching Council of the Brazilian Society of Biomechanics, as a student representative in all institutions he attended and was involved in organizing local and international scientific conferences. His current research interests as a postdoctoral fellow at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute are related to: 1) understanding and improving muscle-bone function and health after injury, disease and ageing and 2) improving the quality of rehabilitation care for people living with a spinal cord injury. Dr. Wiest has published 14 peer-reviewed manuscripts on related topics.
