Perhaps the most iconic site of Apartheid’s forced removals is District Six. It was a densely populated, inner-city working class area that was inhabited by a diverse, multi-racial group of people. Targeted by the racist National Party government, District Six was destroyed and its inhabitants were forcibly removed to far-flung apartheid ghettos on the Cape Flats.

On day 1 of the conference, Siddique Motala will lead a group of attendees on a memory/mapping walk through the site of District Six. Siddique, a geomatics lecturer, has been involved in the surveying and mapping of District Six for at least a decade. The walk will engage with hauntological dis/continuities, maps and landscape, and will end at the Iziko Slave Lodge, where the welcome reception will be held.
