Homeland's early seasons were beloved because of the complicated love story between Carrie and Brody. She was a CIA agent, he was a prisoner of war and national hero who was secretly turned by his captors to spy on America. Love and spyjinx cross paths again in London Spy, a BBC drama starring Ben Whishaw as a man who discovers his boyfriend was a spy after he's found dead. It's a tight drama mixing romance and thrills, with less romance (he's dead!) and more thrills. And at five episodes, it can be finished in an afternoon.

Kaur debuted in the "major recurring role" of Tasneem Qureishi in the season four episode "Iron in the Fire" (October 2014),[1][2] and appeared in nine episodes that season.[2][3] She reprised the role as a series regular in the 2020 eighth and final season of Homeland.[2][4]

Best known at the time for The Lunchbox, Kaur was not used to playing a villain, and later said, "I credit [the casting directors] for imagining that I could take on this role. It was a risk for them".[9] She said of the role, "I really had an incredible time playing a negative part for the first time. That was very exciting and a lot of fun for me."[10] She noted, "I would be behind bars if I did the kind of things I am doing as Tasneem. You can get away with so much on screen. It's exciting to bring legitimacy to a part that you don't exactly agree with on any count".[11] Kaur was told her character would be the mysterious nemesis of Carrie Mathison, the character played by series star Claire Danes, but initially she did not know whether she would perform in scenes with Danes.[6] She said, "Initially I was told I would be part of five episodes. After I landed in Cape Town, they said seven."[7] Kaur would ultimately appear until the end of the season.[7] She believed that "Homeland would be my real introduction to the western audience because it already has a great viewership and fan following. I feel I have a big responsibility to be as true to the story as possible."[6] She confirmed in 2019 that her role in Homeland had contributed to her being cast in other projects.[5]

In season eight, Tasneem is the Director-General of Inter-Services Intelligence, a position which historically has always been held by a man in the real world.[12][13] Kaur said, "She's a woman of power in a very unlikely situation ... You don't expect a woman to be in a position like that."[13] She explained, "At a time when she'd typically been married off and had children, she's the DG of the ISI", adding that "she's obviously somebody who has sacrificed a lot. She has overcome and won over a lot to reach where she is."[12] In the first episode of the season, Saul suggests that Tasneem's stepfather, retired Pakistani general Bunran "Bunny" Latif (Art Malik), must be proud of her for "getting the job he always wanted", to which she replies, "I think he'd have preferred grandchildren."[54] Sejia Rankin of Entertainment Weekly wrote that Bunran "has a clear soft spot for the otherwise hardened Tasneem."[55]

Entertainment Weekly and TVLine predicted that Tasneem would be a "major player" in season eight,[56][57][58] and Rankin called her "a villain from the days of yore".[56] Explaining that Homeland aims to create a "real debate" by presenting both American and non-American points of view, Danes cited Tasneem's role in the first episode of season eight as an example of a "[Pakistani] politician who's really challenging Saul and making credible, cogent points about the ways that America has failed."[59] Kaur called Tasneem "the face of Pakistan" for season eight,[14][15] and "a figure of great importance".[16] Showtime described the character as "a member of [Pakistan's] political elite [whose] interest in the Afghan peace deal proves pivotal for Saul",[60] though she is again positioned as an antagonist.[5][17][61] Initially, Saul needs Tasneem's cooperation "to make the peace negotiations stick."[62] He has not forgotten how the "shady" Tasneem burned him and Carrie in season four,[32] but as the crisis in Afghanistan intensifies, Saul and Tasneem's interests more closely align, and he seeks her out as a true ally.[63] Kaur described the relationship between Tasneem and Saul in season eight as "high-octane",[12] and noted, "95% percent of my work this season was with Mandy."[13] Emma Fraser of Collider wrote that Tasneem "loves to go toe-to-toe with Saul and Taliban leader Haissam Haqqani."[64] Kaur explained her character's situation:

And so, Carrie going off her meds is the meat of the third episode of Homeland's fifth season, "Super Powers," which is more than the repetition it seems to be. It considers Carrie through the lens of both her existence as a TV character (who will always have to face down her mental illness as long as the show lasts) and the country she represents (which, like her, keeps doing the same things and expecting different results).

Homeland was canceled way back in 2018, when the Showtime series was announced to be ending after Season 8. The season, however, was subject to a number of delays, meaning that the series finale has taken two years to make it to TV. Now, Homeland is nearly over, with the final episode coming on Sunday, April 26.

With the showrunner saying that he was done after Season 8, Showtime could have chosen to go on without him, but may have seen this as too big of a risk for the money that Homeland costs to make. According to The Hollywood Reporter, episodes of the show's later seasons cost $6 million each, with Danes making $500,000 an episode.

"The Saul-Carrie story has been the one constant through eight seasons. And we really get to bring that story to a close. It's the reason that I stuck around for eight seasons. And I hope we did some justice." After the penultimate episode ended with Carrie (played by Claire Danes) facing the prospect that she may have to kill Saul (Mandy Patinkin), it seems that their relationship will be central to the final episode.

At eight seasons long, Homeland is already Showtime's second-longest running drama behind Shameless, which premiered nine months before Homeland. Shameless is also coming to an end soon on Showtime, with the final episodes expected in 2021.

After robbing a gun store earlier in "Sock Puppets" (S6E09), Peter Quinn (Rupert Friend) acquires multiple pistols, including a Glock 19, which he later uses to threaten Dar Adal (F. Murray Abraham). He subsequently uses the Glock in several other episodes of the season, though he alternates between the Glock and a SIG-Sauer P229R in other episodes.

While I appreciate the later seasons of "Homeland," none comes close to reaching the dramatic heights of Season 1. The show's first 12 episodes perfectly align, including the gripping finale where Brody, influenced by his daughter, ultimately decides against carrying out his terrorist attack. This pivotal moment resonates so strongly because the preceding episodes are skillfully executed, guiding Brody toward his choice.

The initial three seasons of "Homeland" center on Nicholas Brody, his endeavors to carry out a terrorist attack on American soil, his romantic entanglement with Carrie, and his eventual path to redemption. The concluding episode of Season 3, titled "The Star," brings his narrative arc to a close and could serve as a satisfying series finale, should viewers choose to conclude their journey there. (However, my advice would be to continue watching, as the show only improves!)

"The Choice" stands out as one of the finest season finales in the history of "Homeland." The episode presents several intimate moments between Carrie and Brody when they express remorse for past misdeeds and the difficult choices they have faced in recent years. The narrative is filled with drama surrounding Quinn's attempts to eliminate Brody to assist the captured Saul. Additionally, it features the customary explosive climax, with a car bomb causing significant casualties among crucial supporting characters.

Transparent is back this fall with an all new season. Season 4 will take the Pfefferman family into a deeper exploration of faith, especially when Maura travels to Israel. Each member of the family will experience something different and unique while in the Jewish homeland. This season will also tackle transphobia and homophobia in light of the 2016 election.
