☆  I am usually not much for talking, but perhaps writing will be better. Though I don’t think I have much to write about. I was born into wealth and privilege, somewhat. However, if it wasn’t for Lady Danbury…well….my life would have turned out very differently. As a child, I had a problem with stuttering, with talking in general, really. And due to that, my father wanted nothing to do with me. Lady Danbury helped me with that, and in general. It is thanks to her that I am the man that I am.
When my father was on his deathbed, I made him a promise, that the Hastings title would die with me. I was determined never to marry, never to pass on my title to another soul. Because it is that title that my father cared about above all else. Above his own son, his own wife, anything. But it’s funny how life turns out.
After inheriting my father’s title, Daphne Bridgerton and I hatched a plan to keep mamas and their daughters away from me while I was in London and make her more attractive to prospective suitors to prevent her from having to marry Nigel Berbrooke. We pretended to be courting each other, and eventually truly enjoyed each other’s company too much to stay away.
At a party, I followed her into a garden and we kissed. Her brother Anthony, a close friend of mine, demanded that I marry her. When I refused, he demanded satisfaction in another way: dueling. Of course, I agreed. I was ready to die on that dueling field so that Daphne could have the life she always dreamed of. To be a mother, to have a family as big as her mother and father did. However, Daphne insisted and we married.
After some initial awkwardness, things were great. Until….well….they weren’t. Daphne and I were going to split up until she confessed her feelings to me after our ball. She made me rethink my plans. We made up and now have a beautiful baby boy, August, or Augie for short.
Life has a funny way of working out, and I can’t say I’m upset by it. I love Daphne, I love Augie, and perhaps being loved by Daphne and by our children will be even better than any revenge I could get on my father by not passing his precious title on. I think it will be, anyway.
