Hello! My name is Eloise Bridgerton. Yes, Bridgerton. But I’m not much like my older sister Daphne. She’s far too perfect, and I…well…I am not. My early life was quite happy, actually. Until my dear Papa died and my Mama almost did as well.
So no wonder I’m a bit cynical, hmmm? That, and being a woman in this society that does not seem to appreciate us the way we should be appreciated.
I want a different life. I do not want to simply settle for marrying some man who will not allow me to truly shine. No, I want a great life, or nothing. And I will get it…somehow…one day. Until then, though, I am stuck going to balls and refusing to pretend to be oh-so interested in the suitors my Mama throws at me. Oh, you want to know my life story? Well, that’s none of your business, and I’m no Lady Whistledown, but I will tell you…
Last season, my sister Daphne emerged into society, blah blah blah. She became the diamond, married the Duke of Hastings, and did other wonderfully perfect daughter things. As I’ve mentioned, I am nothing like her. Though she did tell me that she’s certain I’ll make my own way in the world. I just have to figure out how….and I hope that I will, as I can’t endure much longer of this. This season was my entry into society and that went about as well as you could expect, which is to say not well at all.
I am much more fulfilled trying to unmask Lady Whistledown than I am attending balls and parties. As I said, I am not Daphne. I aspire to….more. More than just sitting around looking pretty for the sake of some man. This season, I got closer than ever to unmasking Lady Whistledown and then, she wrote about me. Horrible things, that made it impossible for me to see my new friend Theo Sharpe. That, of course, made me even more determined to unmask her. Make her pay and change her tune to writing about something more meaningful, maybe.
And finally, finally, I did figure it out. I just am shocked. I am still so unsettled by Lady Whistledown’s true identity that I don’t know what to do. As she is….and always has been….my closest, who I thought was my truest friend, Penelope Featherington. I, of course, want nothing more to do with her. But I don’t know what is next. And I am scared. Not that I’d ever admit it, in most cases.
The next season was...a lot. I kept Penelope's secret. At least for a while. And befriended Cressida Cowper. But then Penelope ended up engaged to my brother Colin. And Cressida concocted a scheme of pretending to be Lady Whistledown. She even asked for my help. And so my world came crashing down again. At least I have my family. And Penelope and I are friends again. At least I won't be entirely alone.
So…..that’s my life. And hopefully things will get better from here. Somehow, though, I doubt it.
