☆  Remember those stories about sirens? The mermaid-like creatures that live in the ocean? Well, they’re real. Except sirens are different from mermaids. First there’s the looks: sirens tend to have no hair while in the water while mermaids have plenty. Sirens also have a tail that looks more like a whale’s while mermaids’ tails are closer to that of dolphins. Then there’s the way their societies are set up: Siren society is a matriarchy, whereas mermaid society is more equal. Sirens of all genders do still vote for their leader, though.
The queen of siren society (yes, she’s a queen even though they vote for her) had a daughter, who she named Ula (gem of the sea). The young girl was absolutely doted on, though her mother took care not to spoil her. From a young age, she was given responsibilities in the hopes that one day, if she wanted to, she might follow in her mother’s footsteps and run for office. She was also given access to the best tutors in siren society and grew into a confident young girl.
When Ula was 5 years old, her sister was born. Overjoyed to have a sibling, Ula and Cascadia (cascade, waterfall) were pretty much inseparable from the beginning. The two sisters would do everything together. If Cascadia needed someone to play with, Ula was there. A shoulder to cry on? Ula was there. The two sisters were inseparable for centuries until one day, Cascadia swam too close to the land.
Ula searched the ocean for her sister but to no avail. Eventually, she came across a siren who had seen Cascadia wash ashore. Ula then went to her mother to tell her the bad news. Her mother was upset at losing her younger daughter and equally as upset when Ula wanted to go after her sister. However, Ula and Cascadia’s mother wanted her younger daughter found. And so Ula decided to go on land to search for her lost sister, starting in America which is where Cascadia had been seen swimming towards.
And so, Meribella Brown is born, with Ula taking a false name to blend in better with the humans she’s living among.
