☆ Camille was born Jane Camille Barker in the 19th Century. From a young age, she hated her first name so she told everyone to call her by her middle name. Everyone did except her mother. She refused. In general, Camille and her mother had a tumultuous relationship due to her mother’s focus on getting her married. Not that Camille didn’t want to get married. She did but she wanted to marry for love.
Camille was always a bit ahead of her time. Not happy to just go along with things the way they were. She always wanted more. Wanted adventure. Wanted to travel, to learn more about the world. The only person who would listen to her was her sister Pippa. Despite the slight difference in their ages and the fact that Pippa was younger, Camille treated her sister like her closest confidant. The two of them were very close. Despite this, she was unable to depend on her younger sister for everything. While Camille always had a thirst for adventure, Pippa was content with her life as it was. This made Camille yearn for a friend who would understand her desire for adventure.
Eventually, she finds one. At a ball she meets a young woman only a year older than her named Lydia Newbury. The two women hit it off immediately and become good friends as time goes on. Camille also meets someone else who becomes important in her life. A young man named James White, the son of a local clergyman. The two of them begin a secret romance, hiding it from both of their families because of Camille’s family’s desire for her to make a match with someone more wealthy and James’ father’s strict nature. (Lydia knows about the relationship of course. By this point, she and Camille are best friends).
Everything is great in Camille’s life for a while. Then something happens. She and Lydia are in a carriage accident while Lydia is driving. Camille is thrown off the carriage and is in bad condition. In fear of losing her best friend, Lydia turns her into a vampire. When Camille wakes up, Lydia tells her that she’s done something selfish. Camille asks what and Lydia explains. Camille is shocked at first but isn’t angry with Lydia. Lydia helps her adjust to being a vampire and the two continue their friendship as normal.
Being around her family as a vampire is a bit weird, but Camille manages. She is able to control herself well. She and Lydia continue to have fun and go on whatever adventures they can with each other, to the dismay of Camille’s parents. However, trouble is brewing. Lydia has a boyfriend named Viktor, the one who turned her into a vampire. He isn’t that controlled and doesn’t always do what’s right. Unlike Camille and Lydia who live solely on the blood of animals and willing “donors”, Viktor kills to feed. This causes fights between him and Lydia. After one particularly bad fight, Viktor kills one of Lydia’s human friends. This mistake comes back to bite him, though. Not only is Lydia furious, but the young woman he killed happens to be the daughter of a vampire hunter.
Camille and Lydia become targets through their association with Viktor (though Camille never liked him) and so fleeing England is their only option. Camille doesn’t want to leave without the man who she thinks is her true love, though. She goes to meet James, tells him everything, asks him to run away with her and Lydia. He is disgusted. He calls her a monster.
Camille is upset and leaves to meet Lydia. The two women leave England without Viktor or James and so begins a lifetime of adventures together.
