I like that I can fit piano practice with Musiah around my other commitments. I studied piano in school 18 years ago. I always wanted to continue my practice but work and travel made it hard to find a teacher and time, so I lost my skills. I also didn't initially think to look online.

Background info: My 11-yo has been learning piano for about 4 years. He is fairly serious about it, and practices 7 hours a week. He's currently in level 5 of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Canada (which has 10 levels).

We started out with an inexpensive Casio digital piano. About 2 years ago, his teacher said he needed an accoustic piano, so we got an old one that someone was giving away for free. We've had 2 piano tuners and both have told us that the wood has warped. The current tuner said he will probably not be able to use it beyond RCM level 7.

About a year ago, we changed piano teachers. Now his current teacher says his piano is not good enough because he has a technique issue (plays with his fingers bent backwards) and this piano is not helping him fix it, as the keys are too easy to press so he doesn't have to hit hard enough. She says he needs a new piano by next summer. For context, this teacher teaches on a baby grand which occupies her entire living room.

She recommends I buy him a Yamaha U3 upright piano. After taxes, it costs approximately $15,000 USD new. She said to look for one used from a private seller - a student of hers got one that way, and it was $6000 USD for a 15-yo piano, which is apparently a very good deal (!!!)

This seems like an awful lot to spend, considering that I have no guarantee the kid will continue learning upto level 10 (he says he will, but kids change their minds). He's not trying to be a concert pianist or even a piano teacher.

I'm wondering what the benefits are of buying an expensive piano like that. Does it actually help you play better (faster / good technique), or is it just that it sounds better? Also, if anyone has recommendations for less expensive pianos I'd appreciate it.

It's good to know that a real piano will have 88 keys. My wife would like to start playing the piano, and she wants all the keys. I'll pass this information along to her so that she can look further into her options for buying a piano.

I like how acoustic pianos are able to produce a range of dynamics. I am interested in buying my own piano, but I have been trying to decide between electric and acoustic. It sounds like an acoustic piano would be a better choice since it gives you more control over the volume and tone of the piece you are playing.

Obviously, rote teaching does work, given the large population of non-pianists who can play Chopsticks and Heart and Soul. So the real question is, does rote teaching work as a mode of genuine piano teaching?

So, no. 1 would have been my only point. There are MANY things we teach by rote when we give a piano lesson: technique, expression, posture. Students listen and copy to be able to do these things efficiently.

I went back to practicing piano as an adult in part to save time. My piano teacher would come to my house if we had multiple lessons. That saved me from driving into downtown Austin, Texas, during rush hour. So I signed up for adult piano lessons with my sons. I wanted to learn music theory so that I could transpose my favorite sing-along songs into keys I could sing in, or play at a party.

I found the puzzles of music fascinating. I took a little time each day, even adding in a challenging piece by Mozart. Could I learn the pieces? Little by little I began to make progress. Sometimes, though, I would get too far ahead of myself. Hearing my piano teacher play a piece, I was tempted to despair. How can I play like that? And so the excuses for not practicing began to creep in again.

I have an electric keyboard (unweighted) and I want to learn how to play it. I don't want to learn piano as the keys are weighted and it would throw me off (as there is no need for muscle strengthening with the keyboard). However, the only teachers in my area are piano teachers!

The black and white bits do the same sort of job with either. As in they all produce sounds related to where they are situated on the board. And reading the dots will be the same, too. So, you'll need to know what they represent, regardless of how they get pressed. Most piano teachers will have been asked to teach keyboard at some time - although some will not want the job. In the initial stages,though, a piano teacher willing to help will still be a great help. It's hard to understand how much muscle strength you won't have to use by not playing piano. Most modern keyboards have velocity sensitivity, so the faster/harder you press keys, the louder the sound is, so there is still some muscle strength needed to get the most out of it. I reckon keyboard (organ etc.) players find it harder to cross over than vice versa - I play and teach both.

As a piano teacher myself, I can easily say that it makes no difference whether a student plays on a keyboard or a piano. The basics of learning to play are the same. I recommend going to a piano teacher because I never did, and it took me much longer to learn to play than it would for someone who took lessons. Being self taught is good in its own way, but I still wish I'd taken lessons. If you are worried about wasting time learning about finger strengthening when you do not feel the need, then simply inform your teacher of this. I'm sure they will have no trouble understanding.

Also I would like to mention that muscle strengthening is not something taught but something that will come. Whether you feel it's necessary or not, playing keyboard will build and strengthen muscles that you wouldn't otherwise use. Your fingers will become strong by repeated use on any keyboard, whether the keys are weighted or not. You may even find that learning on a weighted keyed piano will make it easier to play a nonweighted keyboard. I started learning on a keyboard, and once I began to play on a piano with weighted keys, I found it very difficult for a while. Learning both will help you to be more versatile and flexible with styles and composition.

you know, y`d better have an acoustic piano and several digital pianos with heavy real keys of various action and synthesizers and midi keys with light keys, I had experience at learning keyboards using a synthesizer with thin light keys. It is OK, but the key touch should be trained to play on pianos then, especially when you play a difficult virtuoso music like Chopin and Bach... no digital piano and synths in the world, including top-expensive models has a dynamic and sound color range and depth like a good acoustic one like tempered tuned Steinway or Petroff or a good Kawai...

However I will point out that great synth players are at their foundation great pianists. And don't worry about your fingers muscle memory, I'm not really sure what you think will happen...I've not experienced anything like that happening nor heard any student say anything about that.
