Student Testimonials

  • I learned a lot from Elise and Sharon's history class, and would recommend it to everyone! They are really nice and invite open discussions.

  • GREAT CLASS!! DEFINITELY should take it if you are at all interested in becoming more active as an anti racist, or even learning about the path that racism has traveled, and who has fought it! I really like the whole curriculum! I loved how each week we would read a certain amount of chapters, and then answer questions about the chapters we read!! It really made me absorb what I was reading A LOT more than I would normally if not for the list of questions!

  • This is a class that provides you with a big amount of information on Black Civil Rights history, with children's books, lots of class discussions, and taking a deep dive into one person you choose.

Parent Testimonials

  • This education is one of the best Anti-Racist tools I’ve ever seen.

  • My daughter took Part 1 and Part 2 of the Black Civil Rights History Through the Lens of Children's Literature classes and learned so much about this most important subject. We had (sadly) never seen this type of class offered anywhere else, and it couldn't be more timely and crucial for all to learn and understand. This needs to be mandatory in all classrooms around the country. Elise and Sharon sensitively and straightforwardly teach, and welcome open and honest discussion. They carefully chose a selection of incredible and beautiful books, that are informative and often poignant.

I would recommend this class for all children, and urge parents to also read the books to educate themselves further, and to discuss with their children. Thank you, Sharon and Elise, for bringing this to the table for our children to understand, so that our world may be a better and more just place for all people.

  • Sadly, it was my involvement with local schools that made the racial disparities in this area glaringly obvious to me. I moved to this area about 6 years ago, and felt an obligation to my son to educate him on racial injustice in history and in our neighborhood. I wanted you to know that your class means a lot to me personally, and is helping with this intense sense of obligation and commitment to educate him on something truly important. His father and I are so jealous that we can’t join :), and are incredibly impressed with how much our son has learned. Not just on the subject matter, but also on presenting and providing him an arena to learn he has a voice.

  • My daughter learned so much and I am thrilled that this was a defining experience for her summer. I am certain she will no longer see or learn about U.S. history without seeking out the perspectives of voices of color and asking herself what the real story is. I think that I am convinced, thanks to your effective work, that teaching civil rights history might be the most important antiracist intervention for children.
