Readers Against Tyranny Project
Sharing a book to improve the constitutional robustness of the United States
The Readers Against Tyranny Project has distributed 100 copies of Timothy Snyder’s On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century, primarily in Central Pennsylvania, with many copies now being shared across the country.
Our goal is simple: to spread Snyder’s 20 practical lessons for resisting authoritarianism and protecting democratic institutions as widely and quickly as possible. Examples include:
Do not obey in advance.
Defend institutions.
… and 18 more.
How it works
When you receive a copy, read it—making notes or bookmarking this site if you'd like—and then pass the book along to someone else with the same request: read it and keep it moving. A two-week reading window seems to work well for most people, but it’s a quick read at just 120 pages.
If you need a summary before or after reading, we offer a [2-page summary] and encourage you to search for additional summaries online (e.g., try searching “On Tyranny filetype:PDF”, e.g., [Link]).
Returning a book
If you don’t have someone to pass the book to, feel free to return it to:
The Print Factory in Bellefonte, PA
How to help
This is a grassroots project—easy to replicate! If you'd like to help:
Download and print our book labels [original: docx pdf ; revised: docx pdf] onto label paper (the labels we use are 3.5"x5", adjust locally; we used Staples/Avery 5168).
Insert front and back labels into copies of On Tyranny.
Distribute and share!
if you would like to do a bulk version, contact us for our contacts to get bulk rates.
Or simply: buy a copy, read it, and pass it on.
