Sleep Influences Both Semantic and Linguistic Recall

Ashley Francis and Parker Rogers

Sleep is a necessary component to functioning in everyday life, and in a fast paced world, sleep can often be forgotten about. With the intention of bringing a greater understanding to the way in which sleep influences our cognitive ability, we hypothesized that having consistent good sleep allows for increased memory. Using a between subjects design, we recruited participants through a convenience sample to take part in our Sleep Memory Study. Participants were assigned one of four conditions that determined how much time they had to study the material, and which testing material they would receive first. Through the exhibition and analysis of this study, a positive correlation between sleep condition and color test score as well as people descriptor test score was found to support our hypothesis. Therefore, getting a goodnight of sleep leads to higher capability of semantic and linguistic memory.
