Images and Emotion: How Age and Expression Are Perceived

Romana Cavallaro, Tracy Gorab, Kali Wolfer, and Julie Blinder

This study used a within-subjects design and was conducted using four online surveys to answer the question, How do the images of sad children and happy children in comparison to sad older people and happy older people affect the participant's emotion? The images were counterbalanced with each survey presenting two images. The participants were asked to evaluate their mood after viewing each image. Their results were recorded. The sample consisted of 180 participants of varying ages. Their demographics (age, gender, ethnicity) were recorded to evaluate how those variables may play a role in reaction. The results showed no statistical significance in relation to order effect of the images; however, there was evidence to suggest the participants had a stronger emotional response to the sad images.
