Gender Differences in Substance Use

Jessica Bryan

Is there a difference between genders in substance use? Do certain genders prefer different substances over other genders? Do certain genders use more substances than other genders? This research was designed to test the hypothesis that there is a gender difference in substances used and that there is a gender difference in how many times substances are consumed. Past research suggests that this gender difference exists. In an online survey questionnaire, I asked 60 participants, 30 self-reported male and 30 female, to answer questions about their typical substance use in order to test my hypothesis. Past research has indicated that recognizing gender differences in substance use can lead to better and more effective substance use treatments which is a key benefit of this research. Results showed no gender differences in substances use, however, there was a significant difference between genders in type of alcohol consumed the most, X2=(3,N=32)=8.88,p<.05.
