The Petroleum Coke Price Trend in India showed a downward movement during the period under review, with domestic Petroleum Coke prices declining by around 5.53%. Non-calcined Petroleum Coke, Grade A, traded on an Ex-Jamnagar basis, was offered around USD 152–162 per metric ton.
The main pressure came from high inventory levels and weak buying activity from important industrial consumers. Even though refining activity remained stable, demand from cement and power industries was not strong enough to support prices.
Petroleum Coke, commonly called Petcoke, is widely used as a fuel and industrial raw material. Its pricing is closely connected with industrial consumption, refinery output, inventory levels, and the overall pace of economic activity.
When buyers have sufficient stocks and do not need to replenish material quickly, sellers can face difficulty maintaining higher prices. This was visible in the Indian market as buyers remained cautious and waited for more favourable pricing.
The Petroleum Coke Price Trend in India remained under pressure as the domestic market faced comfortable inventory levels and weak offtake. Domestic offers for Non-Calcined Grade A Petroleum Coke were reported in the range of USD 152–162 per metric ton on an Ex-Jamnagar basis.
The decline of around 5.53% reflected the difference between available supply and actual buying interest. Refining activity at Jamnagar and other coastal locations remained stable, meaning there was no major supply shortage pushing prices higher.
At the same time, industrial consumers were not purchasing aggressively. When supply is available but demand remains limited, sellers often have to become more flexible with their offers. This can create a softer market environment.
For buyers, the situation provided an opportunity to negotiate better prices. However, many buyers still remained cautious because they expected the market to soften further.
One of the main reasons for lower Petroleum Coke Prices was high domestic inventory. When distributors and industrial consumers already have enough material in storage, their immediate requirement for fresh purchases becomes lower.
This reduces spot market activity and puts pressure on sellers to compete for available buyers.
Another important factor was weak offtake from key industrial consumers. Cement and power sectors are important demand centres for Petroleum Coke. During the period, demand from these industries remained subdued.
Stable refinery operations meant that supply continued to be available. With no significant supply disruption and weaker consumption, the market naturally moved towards lower price levels.
The combination of comfortable stocks, stable production, and cautious procurement created a market where buyers had greater negotiating power.
The Indian domestic Petroleum Coke market remained relatively comfortable from a supply perspective. Refining activity in Jamnagar and other coastal hubs continued at stable levels.
Stable refinery operations are important for the availability of Petroleum Coke. When refineries continue producing normally, domestic buyers generally have access to regular supplies.
However, stable supply alone cannot support prices if demand is weak. In this case, industrial consumers were not showing strong purchasing interest. This created an imbalance between material availability and actual offtake.
For sellers, this meant that maintaining previous price levels became more difficult. Some suppliers responded by offering discounts in an attempt to encourage purchases.
For buyers, the situation was different. They could afford to wait because inventory availability was comfortable. This reduced urgency and kept the market under pressure.
The cement and power industries are important consumers of Petroleum Coke in India. Changes in their procurement activity can have a noticeable effect on the domestic market.
During the period, demand from both sectors remained tepid. Buyers were not showing strong urgency to increase procurement, which limited the ability of sellers to raise prices.
When cement and power demand is strong, consumers may need to replenish stocks more regularly. This can provide support to Petroleum Coke Prices. However, when industrial activity is slower, buyers may continue using existing inventory and postpone new purchases.
This was one of the important reasons why the Indian market remained soft.
A stronger rebound in construction and energy-related demand would be needed to create more meaningful upward pressure on the market.
The downward trend continued into September, when Petroleum Coke Prices in India declined by around 2.07%.
The September movement was mainly linked to muted procurement and sufficient domestic stock availability. Buyers continued to remain cautious rather than making large purchases.
Sellers attempted to encourage buying through discounting measures. However, these efforts did not immediately create strong demand because buyers expected prices could move lower.
This created a situation where sellers were willing to negotiate while buyers preferred to wait.
Such behaviour is common in a soft commodity market. When buyers believe that prices may decline further, they often avoid building large inventories. This can create additional pressure on sellers and extend the period of weak pricing.
A Petroleum Coke Price Chart can provide a simple way to understand the movement of the Indian market.
The chart for this period would show an overall decline of approximately 5.53%, followed by a further monthly decrease of around 2.07% in September.
The downward movement reflects several connected market factors rather than a single event. High inventory levels reduced the need for immediate purchases, while weak demand from cement and power consumers limited market support.
For procurement professionals, a price chart is useful because it allows them to compare current prices with earlier market levels. It can also help identify whether a decline is temporary or part of a longer period of weakness.
Tracking the chart together with inventory and demand conditions provides a more complete picture of the market.
The Petroleum Coke Price Index can also help buyers and sellers monitor broader market movements.
An index provides a reference point for understanding how prices have changed over time. In a market like Petroleum Coke, where prices can be influenced by refinery activity, industrial demand, and inventory levels, regular index tracking can support better purchasing decisions.
When the index is moving lower, buyers may decide to delay purchases if they have enough inventory. Sellers, on the other hand, may need to become more competitive to maintain sales volumes.
The Petroleum Coke Price Index is therefore useful not only for looking at current prices but also for understanding the overall direction of the market.
The future Petroleum Coke Price Forecast will depend mainly on industrial demand, domestic inventory levels, refinery activity, and procurement behaviour.
If inventory remains high and cement and power demand continues to be weak, prices may remain under pressure. Buyers are likely to continue taking a cautious approach if they believe that additional discounts could become available.
A stronger recovery in construction activity could change this situation. Higher cement production and stronger industrial energy consumption could increase Petroleum Coke demand and encourage buyers to replenish stocks more actively.
Refinery operations will also remain important. Stable production can keep supply comfortable, while any meaningful change in refinery activity could influence domestic availability.
The market may therefore remain sensitive to the balance between supply and industrial consumption. A sustained improvement in demand would be needed for a stronger price recovery.
The behaviour of market participants played an important role in the price decline.
Buyers remained hesitant because they expected further softening. Instead of purchasing large volumes, they preferred to manage existing inventories and wait for clearer price signals.
Sellers faced the opposite situation. With sufficient material available and limited buying interest, they adopted discounting measures to encourage transactions.
This difference in expectations created cautious trading conditions. Sellers wanted to move inventory, while buyers wanted to avoid purchasing too early.
Such a market can remain soft until one of the major factors changes. A reduction in inventory, stronger industrial demand, or a change in refinery supply could improve market sentiment.
For Indian buyers, the downward Petroleum Coke Price Trend in India created a more favourable procurement environment. Comfortable domestic availability meant that buyers had greater flexibility when negotiating with suppliers.
However, waiting for lower prices also carries some risk. If construction and energy demand recover faster than expected, buying activity could increase and prices could stabilize or move higher.
A balanced procurement strategy can therefore be useful. Buyers can monitor inventory levels, downstream demand, refinery activity, and the Petroleum Coke Price Chart before making larger purchasing decisions.
The Petroleum Coke Price Index can also provide a useful reference for comparing current market conditions with previous price movements.
The Indian Petroleum Coke market remained soft because supply was comfortable while demand was not strong enough to absorb available material quickly. Domestic offers for Non-Calcined Grade A Petroleum Coke remained around USD 152–162 per metric ton, while the overall price movement showed a decline of approximately 5.53%.
The additional 2.07% decline in September reflected continued cautious procurement, sufficient domestic stocks, and limited demand from key industrial consumers.
The next phase of the market will depend heavily on whether construction and energy demand begins to recover. A stronger recovery could encourage cement and power buyers to rebuild inventories and provide support to prices.
Until then, inventory levels, industrial offtake, refinery activity, and buyer sentiment will remain important factors to watch when assessing Petroleum Coke Prices in India.
