The LAB Price Trend in the second quarter of 2026 showed a sharp increase across major global markets. Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) prices rose by approximately 51.8% to 68.8% compared with the first quarter, mainly because of higher benzene and kerosene costs, steady demand from detergent manufacturers, and uncertainty in international energy and shipping markets. These factors increased production expenses and made it more expensive for buyers to source LAB from different regions. However, the market started showing signs of correction in June 2026, when prices declined by around 10% to 13% across most major markets.
Linear Alkyl Benzene is an important raw material used in the production of surfactants, which are widely used in household detergents, dishwashing liquids, laundry powders, and other cleaning products. Since these products are part of everyday life, LAB demand is closely connected to the cleaning and personal care industries. At the same time, the cost of producing LAB depends heavily on its feedstocks, particularly benzene and kerosene-based materials. When these raw materials become more expensive, LAB producers generally face higher operating costs.
During Q2 2026, the combination of rising production costs, healthy demand, and geopolitical uncertainty created strong upward pressure on prices. The LAB Price Chart reflected this movement across exporting and importing countries, while the LAB Price Index remained supported by elevated feedstock and transportation costs. The decline in June showed that the market could also respond quickly when raw material costs eased and buyers became more cautious.

The global LAB market experienced significant price increases during the second quarter of 2026. Compared with Q1 2026, prices increased by approximately 52% to 69% across the markets covered in this review. Although the exact increase differed by country, the overall direction remained similar.
One of the main reasons behind this increase was the sharp rise in benzene and kerosene feedstock costs. These materials play an important role in LAB production, and any major change in their prices can directly affect manufacturing expenses. When producers face higher raw material costs, they often adjust their selling prices to protect their margins.
Another important factor was demand from detergent, surfactant, and cleaning product manufacturers. These industries continued to support the market, helping suppliers maintain firm offers during the quarter. When demand remains healthy while production costs increase, buyers may have limited opportunities to negotiate lower prices.
Geopolitical uncertainty also affected the market. Tensions surrounding the USA-Israel versus Iran conflict increased concerns about energy prices, freight expenses, and international shipping routes. Such uncertainty can make buyers and sellers more cautious because delivery costs and shipment schedules become harder to predict.
As a result, the LAB market experienced a strong upward movement during Q2 2026. However, the market did not continue rising at the same pace throughout the entire quarter. By June, prices began to decline as feedstock costs softened, inventories improved, and buyers delayed some fresh purchases.
Saudi Arabia recorded one of the strongest increases in the LAB market during Q2 2026. Export prices on an FOB Al-Jubail basis for material with 98% assay increased by approximately 65.5% compared with the previous quarter.
The main reason for this increase was the rise in benzene and kerosene costs, which increased the overall expense of LAB production. At the same time, export demand from detergent manufacturers remained healthy, allowing suppliers to maintain firm selling prices.
Geopolitical uncertainty also affected regional energy markets and created additional concerns about export logistics. When freight costs and shipping risks increase, buyers often have to pay more to secure reliable deliveries.
However, the upward movement started to ease in June 2026. LAB prices in Saudi Arabia declined by approximately 13.4% as feedstock costs softened, export demand weakened, and inventories improved. This correction suggested that buyers were becoming more careful about purchasing at previously elevated prices.
Qatar's LAB export market also experienced a strong increase during Q2 2026. Prices on an FOB Mesaieed basis for 98% assay material rose by approximately 64.8% compared with Q1 2026.
Higher benzene costs played a major role in supporting supplier prices. Healthy export demand from detergent and surfactant manufacturers also helped maintain the upward trend. In addition, uncertainty surrounding regional shipping routes increased concerns about delivery schedules and transportation expenses.
The LAB Price Chart for Qatar reflected the strength of the export market during the quarter, with elevated production costs providing further support to supplier offers.
In June, however, LAB prices declined by around 12.6%. The correction followed softer crude oil prices, reduced export demand, and delays in fresh purchasing decisions. Buyers appeared more interested in monitoring market conditions before committing to additional volumes.
China recorded a comparatively smaller, but still significant, increase in LAB prices during Q2 2026. Export prices on an FOB Shanghai basis for 98% assay material rose by approximately 51.8% compared with the previous quarter.
Higher benzene costs were a key factor behind the increase. Demand from detergent and surfactant manufacturers also supported the market, helping producers maintain stronger export prices.
International energy market uncertainty added another layer of pressure. Concerns about freight costs and shipping arrangements made international trade more difficult to plan, especially for buyers managing their purchasing budgets.
In June 2026, Chinese LAB prices declined by approximately 10.1%. Softer feedstock costs, slower export demand, and improved inventories contributed to the downward movement.
Compared with some other markets, China's reported quarterly increase was lower. Nevertheless, the market followed the same broad pattern of rising prices during Q2 followed by a correction in June.
Spain experienced a strong rise in LAB export prices during Q2 2026. Prices on an FOB Barcelona basis for 98% assay material increased by approximately 64.8% compared with Q1.
Higher benzene costs and healthy export demand supported supplier pricing. European energy market uncertainty also increased concerns about manufacturing expenses and logistics. When transportation becomes more expensive or less predictable, exporters may need to adjust their offers to reflect the additional cost of delivering products.
The LAB market in Spain therefore remained firm throughout much of the quarter. Higher production costs helped support the LAB Price Index, while uncertainty in international trade contributed to the overall upward movement.
By June 2026, prices had declined by around 11.8%. The correction was mainly linked to lower feedstock costs and weaker export demand. This change suggested that the market was moving away from the exceptionally strong conditions seen earlier in the quarter.
Germany's LAB market recorded an increase of approximately 61.8% during Q2 2026 compared with the previous quarter. The reported prices were import prices on a CIF Hamburg basis for 98% assay material arriving from Spain.
Higher import costs were an important factor behind the increase. German buyers had to consider not only the price of LAB itself but also transportation, insurance, and other expenses included in the landed cost. As these expenses increased, import quotations remained firm.
Demand from detergent and cleaning product manufacturers also supported the market. Since LAB is used in products that serve everyday household and industrial needs, demand from these industries continued to provide a degree of stability.
In June 2026, German LAB prices declined by approximately 11.6%. Softer import demand and weaker supplier offers contributed to the correction. The movement highlighted how changes in international prices and purchasing activity can quickly affect import-dependent markets.
India recorded the largest increase among the markets covered in this review. LAB import prices on a CIF Calcutta Sea basis for 98% assay material sourced from Saudi Arabia increased by approximately 68.8% in Q2 2026 compared with Q1.
The increase was driven by higher benzene costs, rising import expenses, and healthy demand from detergent and surfactant manufacturers. Domestic suppliers also maintained firm pricing because their production costs had increased.
Freight expenses and international shipping uncertainty added further pressure. For importers, the final cost of LAB depends on several factors, including the export price, transportation expenses, insurance, and other import-related charges. When these costs rise together, the impact on domestic buyers can be substantial.
The market began to correct in June 2026, when Indian LAB prices declined by around 12.9%. Softer feedstock costs, more moderate import demand, and cautious purchasing decisions contributed to the decrease.
This movement showed that even after a strong quarterly increase, buyers could become more selective when prices reached higher levels. Importers appeared to prefer monitoring market developments rather than purchasing large quantities immediately.
The LAB Price Chart for Q2 2026 showed a clear upward trend across the six markets, followed by a decline in June. The quarterly increase was broad-based, although the scale of the movement varied by country.
The reported price changes compared with Q1 2026 were as follows:
India: Up 68.8%
Saudi Arabia: Up 65.5%
Qatar: Up 64.8%
Spain: Up 64.8%
Germany: Up 61.8%
China: Up 51.8%
India recorded the strongest increase, while China recorded the smallest increase among these markets. This difference reflects the fact that individual markets can respond differently to feedstock costs, import requirements, demand conditions, and trade expenses.
June brought a noticeable correction across all six markets. The reported declines ranged from approximately 10.1% in China to 13.4% in Saudi Arabia.
It is important to understand that these June declines do not necessarily mean prices returned to their Q1 levels. They represent a downward movement after a period of substantial increases. The market therefore remained sensitive to raw material costs, inventory levels, and purchasing decisions.
Benzene and kerosene-related feedstock costs were among the most important factors influencing LAB prices during Q2 2026. When these materials become more expensive, producers face higher manufacturing costs. These increases can eventually pass through to buyers.
When feedstock prices move in the opposite direction, the pressure on production costs may ease. This was one of the factors behind the June correction.
LAB demand is closely connected to the detergent and cleaning product industries. Manufacturers need a reliable supply of raw materials to maintain production schedules and meet customer requirements.
During Q2 2026, healthy demand supported supplier pricing in several regions. However, when LAB prices rise sharply, some buyers may reduce immediate purchases or use existing inventories. Such decisions can reduce buying activity even when underlying demand remains relatively stable.
Geopolitical tensions surrounding the USA-Israel versus Iran conflict increased uncertainty in energy markets and international trade. Higher energy costs can affect production, freight, and transportation, while shipping uncertainty can make delivery planning more difficult.
These factors contributed to the upward pressure on LAB prices during the quarter.
Transportation expenses are especially important for countries that rely on imported LAB. An increase in freight rates or other shipping-related costs can raise the final landed price, even if the export price changes only slightly.
This was relevant to import-dependent markets such as Germany and India, where buyers had to manage both product costs and international delivery expenses.
Inventory levels also played a major role in the June correction. When buyers and suppliers hold sufficient stocks, they may feel less pressure to purchase immediately. Buyers can wait for better prices, while suppliers may become more flexible when they need to move available material.
This change in purchasing behaviour helped reduce upward pressure across the market toward the end of the quarter.
The LAB Price Index provides a useful way to understand price movements over time. When the index rises, it generally indicates that prices have increased relative to a selected reference period. When it falls, it indicates a decline relative to that reference.
During Q2 2026, the LAB Price Index remained supported by higher feedstock costs, firm supplier offers, and elevated transportation expenses. The sharp quarterly increases across major markets reflected the combined effect of these conditions.
The June correction indicated that the market was beginning to adjust. Softer raw material prices, improved inventories, and weaker export or import demand reduced some of the pressure that had pushed prices higher earlier in the quarter.
However, an index should not be viewed as a guarantee of future price movements. It is a way to track market direction, and its interpretation depends on the underlying data, reference period, and geographical coverage.
For buyers and procurement teams, monitoring the index alongside feedstock prices, freight costs, and inventory conditions can provide a clearer picture of the market.
The LAB Price Forecast for the period following Q2 2026 will depend on how several important market factors develop. The June correction suggests that the exceptional upward pressure seen earlier in the quarter may have eased, but it does not establish that prices will continue falling.
If benzene and kerosene costs remain stable or decline further, LAB producers may face less pressure to increase their selling prices. Improved inventories and cautious purchasing activity could also limit further gains.
On the other hand, renewed increases in energy prices, higher freight costs, or fresh shipping disruptions could support LAB prices again. Strong demand from detergent and surfactant manufacturers may also help suppliers maintain firm offers if production costs remain elevated.
Regional differences will continue to matter. Export prices in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, China, and Spain may respond differently from import prices in Germany and India because transportation costs, local supply conditions, and purchasing requirements vary.
For buyers, a practical approach would be to monitor prices regularly, compare supplier offers, maintain reasonable inventory levels, and avoid making purchasing decisions based on a single market movement. Where possible, buyers may benefit from discussing delivery schedules and contract terms with suppliers to manage uncertainty.
Overall, the market outlook remains dependent on feedstock movements, demand conditions, logistics, and geopolitical developments. The available Q2 data supports a cautious outlook rather than a definite prediction of either a sustained decline or another sharp increase.
