Ratul Puri on integrated energy systems, reliable power delivery and India’s growing electricity demand.

As electricity demand continues to increase, Ratul Puri believes that integrated energy systems will become increasingly important in delivering reliable, affordable, and sustainable power across India.

India’s power sector is undergoing a significant structural transformation. Increasing industrial activity, expanding digital infrastructure, rapid electrification, and rising energy consumption are reshaping the country’s electricity demand. Peak power demand has reached unprecedented levels and is expected to rise further as manufacturing, artificial intelligence, data centres, and electric mobility become increasingly important contributors to economic growth.

The scale of this transformation is already visible in India’s electricity demand. According to the Ministry of Power, the country recorded an all-time peak electricity demand of 256.1 GW on 25 April 2026. This highlights the rapidly expanding scale of India’s power requirements and the need for infrastructure that can support continued economic growth. This development reinforces Ratul Puri’s view that India needs an energy system capable of delivering dependable electricity on a much larger scale.

According to Ratul Puri, Indian businessman and Chairman of Hindustan Power, these developments are changing the priorities of India’s energy transition. While renewable energy capacity will continue to grow, increasing attention is being placed on developing integrated and resilient energy infrastructure that can deliver reliable electricity whenever it is needed.

The first phase of India’s clean energy transition demonstrated the country’s ability to expand renewable energy deployment at scale. The next phase will depend on how effectively renewable generation can be integrated with storage, transmission, and grid infrastructure to create a flexible and future-ready electricity network. As renewable sources contribute a growing share of power generation, reliable electricity delivery will become increasingly important alongside continued capacity expansion.

India is moving into what can be described as an “era of electricity”, with manufacturing, digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence, and electric mobility generating a new wave of demand for dependable and uninterrupted power. Industrial expansion, digital services, electric vehicles, and AI-driven technologies require electricity networks that are more reliable, adaptable, and responsive. This changing demand profile requires an energy ecosystem capable of managing both higher base consumption and increasing peak loads.

This growth is expected to continue over the coming decade. The Central Electricity Authority’s 20th Electric Power Survey projects that India’s peak electricity demand could reach approximately 446 GW by 2034–35, while annual electrical energy requirements may increase to around 3,215 billion units.

Meeting these changing power requirements will require a coordinated approach to infrastructure development. Renewable energy will remain central to India’s long-term energy strategy, but simply adding generation capacity will not be sufficient for a power system facing greater variability and increasingly complex demand patterns. Investment in battery storage, transmission networks, grid flexibility, and intelligent system operations will become increasingly important to ensure that clean electricity can be delivered efficiently across the country.

Battery Energy Storage Systems are becoming an important part of this transition. Storage can help balance electricity supply and demand, strengthen grid stability, and improve the utilisation of renewable generation, thereby increasing the resilience of the broader electricity network. As renewable penetration continues to rise, combining storage with solar and other clean energy technologies will become increasingly relevant for providing dependable and dispatchable electricity.

Hybrid renewable energy projects are also becoming increasingly important as India moves towards more integrated energy solutions. Combining renewable generation with storage can increase operational flexibility and enable electricity to be supplied beyond periods of peak solar production. Such integrated projects can support greater grid stability while helping meet the country’s growing requirement for reliable, round-the-clock clean electricity.

At the same time, India’s energy transition will continue to require a diversified and balanced power mix. Renewable energy is expected to remain the main driver of clean energy expansion, supported by storage and modern transmission infrastructure. Flexible resources such as hydro, pumped storage, and other dispatchable technologies can continue to support system reliability during the transition. Such an approach can contribute to energy security while supporting India’s longer-term decarbonisation objectives.

The opportunities emerging from this changing energy landscape extend beyond electricity generation. Battery storage, green hydrogen, and industrial decarbonisation initiatives are creating additional pathways for sectors seeking dependable and lower-carbon energy solutions. As industries work to improve efficiency and reduce emissions, integrated energy infrastructure will become an increasingly important foundation for sustainable industrial development.

This transformation is also changing the role of independent power producers. Energy developers are increasingly expected to contribute beyond conventional generation assets by developing integrated solutions that improve system flexibility, support grid operations, and strengthen long-term energy resilience. The industry is gradually moving from an approach focused on individual projects towards one centred on creating a more connected, flexible, and responsive power ecosystem.

Reflecting these developments, Hindustan Power continues to expand its portfolio across renewable energy, battery storage, and integrated energy infrastructure. Under the leadership of Ratul Puri, the company remains focused on developing energy systems designed to improve reliability, operational flexibility, and efficient electricity delivery.

India’s energy transition is entering a new stage shaped by increasing electricity consumption and changing patterns of power use. The long-term opportunity extends beyond adding renewable capacity to building an integrated electricity system capable of supporting economic growth while providing reliable, affordable, and sustainable power. As the country’s energy ecosystem develops further, the ability to effectively connect generation, storage, and grid infrastructure into a coordinated system will increasingly shape the next phase of India’s power sector.
