About Me

I am a Principal Machine Learning Scientist in AWS AI working on Natural Language Processing, more specifically, in Conversational AI. I am part of the Amazon AI Lab. My interests include, Machine Learning (ML) for Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks. I have worked on applications in the areas of healthcare analytics, question answering, information retrieval - especially from social media, machine translation and speech science.

Work Experience and Education:

I received my PhD from the Language Technologies Institute, School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in 2011. I was at IBM's India Research Lab (IRL) as a Research Staff Member from 2011 to 2015. I was in the Machine Translation team and also in the Watson for Contact Centers team.

I was also a postdoctoral scholar at UCSD in 2015 after which I joined as a Research Staff Member at IBM, Almaden, San Jose. I was part of the Watson Knowledge Discovery group and the Watson for Pharmacovigilance group.

Before my Masters (2005) and PhD at CMU, I worked at the Indian Institute of Science as a project assistant for a year and a half. I completed my B.E in Electronics and Communication from M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bangalore.

Service and Publications:

Rashmi has 30+ top-tier NLP/ML conference papers and 17+ patents (12 granted, 5 filed patents and many under submission) in peer-reviewed venues (Google Scholar). She has also given numerous talks at conferences on SOTA approaches being applied to various NLP tasks on real-world applications or in Industry settings. She is a co-chair for the Industry Track at NAACL 2022. She organizes workshops at top-tier external NLP conferences (NLP4MC at NAACL 2021, NLP4MC at ACL 2020), and chairs sessions at NLP conferences (NAACL Industry Track 2019). She has also been on the program committees for ACL, NAACL, EMNLP, COLING and AAAI.
