The Ranking Systems Research (RSR) Group is supported by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office under Grant FK 145838.
We will organise the 4th Fairness in Sports workshop on 12 June 2026 at Corvinus University of Budapest, Hungary.
A paper co-authored by two members of the research group entitled Increasing competitiveness by imbalanced groups: The example of the 48-team FIFA World Cup appeared in European Journal of Operational Research on 19 November 2025.
A paper co-authored by a member of the research group entitled Differentiating a Linear Recursive Sequence appeared in Mathematical Notes on 8 September 2025.
Ranking is a fundamental issue in many fields of science: rankings are used to represent both individual and collective preferences, allocate financial and other resources, or support potentially life-changing decisions.
We are focusing on two specific fields where rankings play a prominent role: pairwise comparison matrices and sports tournaments.
The goal of the project is to demonstrate that the axiomatic analysis of ranking systems can offer new and important insight into both decision-making methods and sports rules.
