The Soul Sessions is the debut studio album by English singer and songwriter Joss Stone, released on 16 September 2003 by S-Curve Records. The album consists of cover versions of soul songs from the 1960s and 1970s, in addition to a cover of the White Stripes' 2001 song "Fell in Love with a Girl". In 2004, The Soul Sessions was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize and was nominated for a MOBO Award for Best Album.[2][3]

The Soul Sessions Vol. 2 is the sixth studio album by English singer and songwriter Joss Stone, released on 20 July 2012 by S-Curve Records and her own label, Stone'd Records. A follow-up to Stone's debut studio album, The Soul Sessions (2003), the album consists of 11 cover versions of soul songs from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, in addition to a cover of Broken Bells' 2009 song "The High Road".

The Soul Sessions Vol. 2 was recorded over two live recording sessions in New York City and Nashville.[3] The album is a joint release between Stone's own independent label Stone'd Records and S-Curve Records, the label that released her first two studio albums, The Soul Sessions (2003) and Mind Body & Soul (2004).[4] Stone stated, "I really had fun revisiting The Soul Sessions' idea and I'm really pleased with the results. I've committed long term to my label Stone'd Records, but it felt right to team up with Steve Greenberg and S-Curve again for this release. I think there are some great songs on the album and I loved performing them with such brilliant musicians."[4]

In a more enthusiastic review for AllMusic, critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine believed "for the most part, The Soul Sessions, Vol. 2 does feel right: it has the form and sound of classic soul while never acknowledging that R&B continued to develop past, say, 1972. For an audience that agrees with that thesis, this is fun."[9] The Guardian's Dave Simpson described the album as "a powerful, heartfelt and classy comeback", claiming that Stone has "certainly returned to her debut's soul covers format in more mature and superb voice."[13] Hal Horowitz of American Songwriter called the album "pretty terrific" as it "proves the UK singer is serious about her classic American R&B".[10] John Aizlewood of BBC Music viewed The Soul Sessions Vol. 2 as "Stone's most focused and rewarding album since Vol 1".[20]

It's impossibe not to like some of the tracks; the catchy "Super Duper Love" has received heavy radio play and I imagine will sell well with the Radio 2 set. But ultimately this album seems a bit of an artistic compromise, music from the rule book rather than the heart. That said, I for one look forward to hearing her first proper album, which will hopefully allow us to hear more of Joss's real soul.

Stone has been known to experiment with different styles in her own work as well, and her albums feature an exciting patchwork of various influences, creating a catalogue characterized by the fusion of her powerhouse soul vocals with reggae, world music, and hip-hop soundscapes.

Stone reunited with S-Curve's Steve Greenberg earlier this year for a series of electrifying sessions in Nashville, with a stellar cast of musicians including Ernie Isley, Delbert McClinton, original Muscle Shoals Swamper Clayton Ivey, and others. The resulting album showcases a young woman at the height of her vocal powers. Ten years on from the original album, which was recorded by Stone at the tender age of 15, there is undoubtedly a new level of maturity in evidence on this set - a stunning exercise in vocal poise, passion and power.

Released in September of that year, the collection of R&B and soul covers was lapped up by the public, going three-times platinum in the UK and platinum in the US, Canada and several other countries, and made Stone an international star. Nine years later, following four further albums of original material, Stone released The Soul Sessions Volume 2, explaining that she wanted to revisit the approach in a way that reflects where she's at today, as an experienced artist and a grown-up woman. Many reviewers have highlighted the old-meets-new aesthetic of Volume Two, which sees Stone and her ace band giving authentic and stomping and heart-rending renditions of classic songs like The Chi-Lites' 'Give More Power To The People', Womack & Womack's 'Teardrops', Sylvia's 'Pillow Talk', and an old-style reinterpretation of a modern song, the Broken Bells' 'The High Road', all set in a sound-image that's distinctly modern.

Greenwell explains how the songs were chosen. "One of the best things that Steve [Greenberg] brings to the table is his A&R capacity. He compiled a folder of maybe 50 songs, and I had them on my laptop and Joss and I would sit together and play them, and she'd say which ones she felt like doing. Late last year we recorded a demo version of the song '(1-2-3-4-5-6-7) Count The Days' at Sear Sound in New York, but the rest of the album was recorded in March of this year at Blackbird Studios in Nashville, with the main tracking sessions taking eight days, and horn and percussion overdubs, as well as some vocal overdubs, six days. After that we went to Sono Studios, near Prague, where we recorded strings and a few vocal takes, and finally I mixed everything at my own studio.

Given Greenwell's old-style approach to the Nashville tracking sessions, during which he presumably recorded everything exactly the way he wanted it, one could be forgiven for assuming that the mix would be simple. Apparently, however, some very modern concerns made the situation rather more complicated. He sighs, "I wish it had been that easy. But when I came back from Prague, I carried the hard drive up to my studio and immediately began mixing. That is one of my least favourite things to do. For some reason, a discussion like 'Why don't we send Steve to the Bahamas for a week to clear his head?' never took place! I find mixing stuff I have also tracked a little more difficult than getting a DVD with a session, when I can simply be Mr Mixer. And in this case I never stepped away from the album, and I mixed everything alone, and that made it even more difficult.
