"DECOLONIZING QUEERNESS" at the 2020 Pittsburgh Racial Justice Summit
On January 25, 2020, Rangoli Pittsburgh facilitated the "Decolonizing Queerness" workshop at the 2020 Pittsburgh Racial Justice Summit.
We had a packed workshop featuring lectures on approaches to teaching queerness globally, and the impacts of imperialism/colonialism to the perceptions of queerness in larger culture from Julie Beaulieu, Ph.D. (University of Pittsburgh; Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies), and T. J. Tallie, Ph.D. (University of San Diego, History).
Afterwards, attendees participated in group discussions facilitated by queer community members of color. Attendees reflected on how our perceptions of queerness have been influenced by imperialism globally and thought about ways to decolonize their own perceptions and practices of gender, sexuality, and queerness.
