Biography

Dr. Rafiei obtained his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Ohio State University in December of 2016. Since then, he has been working as a postdoc and lecturer in different departments at the Ohio State University and the Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Rafiei's research activities have been multidisciplinary in nature crossing between Civil, Structural, Construction, Materials, and Biomedical Engineering as well as Neuroscience, Neurology, Physical Medicine.

Dr. Rafiei has research collaborations with multi-disciplinary research groups at the Johns Hopkins University, the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, University of Colorado at Boulder, College of St. Scholastica, and the Ohio State University, in diverse areas including computer-aided simulations of defects and plasticity in crystalline materials, shape optimization and characterization of 3D printed materials, structural response predictions in concrete dams, ventilation systems, and medical science. Although these projects were all very different, a common theme is the use of cutting-edge signal processing, machine learning, and optimization techniques. Dr. Rafiei has been involved in multiple grant writing experiences for different funding agencies including the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, and Google over the past few years.
