Math Stories
I've made a couple math books for my children, and I've also told math stories in my daughter's pre-kindergarten classroom.
Math stories for pre-kindergarten
These math stories were made for my daughter's pre-kindergarten classroom. For each one we told the story on the rug, using the whiteboard to draw pictures and solve the math problems in the story. Then each child got a worksheet where they could practice solving the problems from the story.
Birthday in the Jungle (adding one more): story and worksheets
Going to Grandad's (greater than and less than): story and worksheets
Bingo (ways to make a number): this one is a song, rather than a story. Teach the children about all the ways to make five by drawing five boxes in a row, writing one letter of the word "Bingo" in each box, and coloring in the first zero, one, two, three, four or five boxes. Then sing the song "Bingo," slowly, helping the children clap on the colored boxes and read the letters in the remaining boxes. Invite the children to suggest other names, count the letters, and use a similar method to figure out all the ways to make that number. worksheet
Fractions: worksheet (There was once a story with this worksheet, but apparently I was too busy that week to write it down.)
MINECRAFT: The Math Mod
Your little cousin finds a portal to Minecraft and drags you in with him. It turns out to be the math mod of Minecraft, where you can defeat mobs by solving math problems and mine valuable materials in a new dimension, the Abstract. Covers 2nd-3rd grade multiplication and division, including modular arithmetic.
